Has anyone ever had a breast ultrasound scan?

I've had a (presumed) blocked duct for nearly 4 weeks now and GP is referring me for an ultrasound scan at the breast clinic at the hospital.

Has this ever happened to you? What should I expect? What will they do if they find it is just blocked milk?

My GP said it didn't feel like anything worrying to her but I'm feeling a bit low about it at times :(

No experience of it but I think I read somewhere that ultrasound can be used to treat a persistent blockage as it helps break it down. Maybe do a bit of research on that before you go so you can ask for that?

I've had one but it was for an abscess that I'd already had non-surgical treatment for, so there was no doubt as to what it was. They just wanted to see exactly how big it was so they could operate effectively.

I have had a breast ultrasound - it was fine, totally painless, lasted for maybe 5 minutes, where they had a good look over the whole breast, and the area where the lump was. I got the results straight after the ultrasound.

thanks for the responses, that's reassuring eviscerate

eachpeach I've read that too. My GP had never heard of it but I'll print something out to take to the clinic and see what they say

Yes, as others have said it's painless, they put gel on your boob then systematically scan the whole area and have a good look at the site they are concerned about.
I had a female nurse in with the male consultant but didn't request it- I imagine they have to now.
They were checking me for tumours so did both sides- don't be alarmed if they do for you too, they are just thorough.

I've had biopsies too if you get to that point, but it sounds like they are just being cautious, you boobs change so much, what's "normal" is hard to gauge!

Hope it goes well :)

yes for an abcess - just like for the baby one, absolutely painless (just about all that was though)
