fashionable clothing suitable for breastfeeding?

Hi, I'm having a wardrobe nightmare....can anyone recommend clothing suitable for breastfeeding? I have seen the usual wrap/crossover tops and I'm not particularly keen on those being the only thing I can wear for the next god-knows-how-long......any clever workarounds or suggestions? Oh, and it must be reasonably priced - MAT pay isn't much!

I've never really bought anything specifically for breastfeeding. Some people suggest wearing a vest top underneath whatever you are wearing if you are shy about flashing a bit of tummy. I've always found that baby covers everything anyway!

I have never had special bf clothes. Don't waste your money.
Shirts / button fron tops are good - undo a few buttons for access.
I prefer v neck tops, I just pop boobies out of the top.

I just wear my normal clothes, other than a small bit of breast above the baby's mouth the baby covers everything else. Nursing tops have always looked very complicated to me. You see many people with Musilns or some other piece of cloth over the baby, I'm not comfortable with covering my baby while he's eating so don't bother but if it makes you feel more able to feed in public then go for it.

As long as it'll either lift up or pull down you can wear anything.

HermyaAndThePomBears · 22/11/2010 16:56

I wear a vest top and then a long sleeve top over the top which seems to work for me. I pull the top up and the vest top down and sort of turn around to prevent people seeing me latch on and if DS comes off I just pull my top down and we're done.

I'm more shy about exposing flabby stomach than breast, so I either wear shirts or low cut tops that I can whip a boob out of, or a vest under tops so I can pull the vest down and top up. A cardigan is useful for covering you up a bit too.

H&M do some nice nursing tops, though personally I didn't get on with them.

I have just been wearing my usual stuff, but am stretching out the necklines whipping boobs out of the top, and don't like lifting them and exposing my belly - think i'm gonna get some button front tops and a wrap dress or two. thanx guys

H and M do some casual breast feeding tops for not loads of cash. I wear breast feeding vests with a nice cardigan over the top. I have one lovely dress from Frugi.com. It was pricey but lovely organic cotton and perfect for special occasions. Check out ebay too.

Did you wear bump bands when you were pregnant? I wear them under my clothes. I tuck the top of the bump band under underneath the bottom of my bra. So when I lift my top up I just need to whip boob out and there is no stripey flabby tummy on display.

mrsgordonfreeman · 23/11/2010 23:05

I just buy dresses and tops that button or wrap. Keep an eye out, try things on and see if you can get a boob out in them.

I have just bought this dress from Hobbs:

www.hobbs.co.uk/index.cfm?page=1017&productid=0210-5965-3016L00&productvarid=0210-5965-3016L00-BLACK%20MULTI-12

which is very nice for work.

I wear either button down tops (there are a lot of Henley or grandad styles in the shops), or baggy-ish tops with a vest underneath. One trick is to wear your vest like a boob tube and hook the straps through the unclippy bits on the cups of your bra, so then you don't end up exposing anything if you get yourself ready under your t-shirt.

tanmu82 · 25/11/2010 11:23

I like your bump band idea lynzjam and the tip to hook your vest top in your bra poppy283 - will try those. mrsgordon that dress is waaay beyond my budget and I've nowhere nice to wear it anyhow!
