weaning from breast - finding a cup

DD is nearly a year and I'm starting to wean her from bfing, she's never taken a bottle so I'm using a doidy cup for the daytime feed that I'm replacing with milk, which is fine at home but it's pretty messy so I wanted to use a spouted cup for when I'm out and about - does anyone have a suggestions for a cup that a non-bottle accepting baby will use?? I've tried a couple and she just seems a bit bemused and chews the spout!

anyone? Kind of struggling with this and I can't afford to keep buying cups that she won't drink from!

Neither of mine ever accepted bottles. I have given them both spouted beakers from about 11 months old. I never got on with Doidy's. Both mine have liked the cow beaker you can get in mothercare / jojo etc.

Although there's nothing terribly special about the design of it. Maybe your DD just needs a bit of time to get used to a beaker in general?

Actually that milk cup might not suit you - I only use it at home. It doesn't have a travel cover I don't think. Hmmmm or actually maybe it came with one but I never used it. I'm alot of help aren't I!!

What water cup does your DD use and could dhe not just use that for milk too? (Or does she use a Doidy for water too?)

susitwoshoes · 21/11/2010 21:58

thanks for your replies California, she uses a doidy for water and has a sippy cup but hasn't ever really got on with it, she just spits it out, I tried it for milk today when we were out, she did drink from it but in short bursts and had hardly any.

I've seen the cow cup, might give it a go!

I've bought DS one with a pop up straw on, as he won't take from any cup, but can and will drink from a straw.

It was £1.50 in Mothercare.

HTH.

At one year baby only needs morning and evening milk so no need to have an on the go cup as presumably at home at these times.

I think at one need a minimum of 12oz so should be able to fit that in morning, evening etc. I have never continued afternoon milk once onto cows milk.

If you do want a cup maybe one without a valve -

www.tommeetippee.co.uk/product/flip_n_sip_4m__/

is that what you mean by sippy cup?

SirBoobAlot · 21/11/2010 23:13

MumNW - each child is an individual though. And if the OP wants to start weaning from the breast, this fluid needs to be replaced with something?

susitwoshoes · 22/11/2010 09:15

MumNW - I do intend to drop the afternoon milk soon but as Sir Boob says, she needs to have a drink and milk seems to be more popular than water - she's not a big eater either so can't fill her up with yoghurt. Also, I can't quite get my head around the bedtime feed, it's so messy with the doidy that I do it in the kitchen with DD bundled up in a gazillion muslins and bibs - but I would rather give her her bedtime milk in her room, but don't want milk (and subsequent pong!) on her carpet, pjs or sleeping bag!

SirBoob, we've got a Mothercare here so I'll try the straw option, £1.50 is a bargain. Thanks again. I'm feeling a bit low about weaning her, it's been such a lovely time but feel we need to move on now.

My DS2 (19 months) failed miserably with bottles, but got the hang of straws very well. He was drinking well from an open cup from about 12 months, but he does have an older brother to copy. Have you tried the bottles with straws?

omnishambles · 22/11/2010 09:20

susi - understand that you want to wean completely - we kept the evening feed as it was easier for us that way but when that went we stopped doing bedtime milk entirely and ramped up the evening meal at 6pm - it had a good knock on effect that it made them hungrier for solids at breakfast time as well.

Are you warming the cows milk a little bit? we found that the dcs both preferred a fast flowing cup - ie one without the non-spill top but tbh neither of them are enthusiastic drinkers of milk in the same way that other dcs are - some just arent interested.

Is there any way you could up the food? in what way isnt she interested in it?

The Nuk cup is nice as it has a very soft spout that I think tends to suit breastfed babies.

I have always mixed and matched the cups we use (14 months and breastfeeding): a doidy for water (now beginning to use this independently!), an Avent non-spill cup for water out and about and the Nuk for other people to give milk when I am out.

If the Nuk doesn't work for you then try the Nuby cup with a flip up/down straw, as I have also heard good things about that cup.

umf · 22/11/2010 09:48

Had no end of trouble with this. Tried about 15 kinds of cup. Agree one without valve easiest. They do figure it out in the end.

The one we ended up with was this simple (and cheap) Tommee Tippee:

susitwoshoes · 22/11/2010 11:40

thanks for all the replies! We have the Tommee Tippee first cup which she was alright on, but not great. I've just been out to get the pop up straw one from Mothercare so I'll give that a go. With food, she likes her food but doesn't eat a massive amount - sometime she will eat loads but is then a bit sick.

I'm probably not giving it enough time, we've only been trying a week.

Gosh we tried loads of different cups - some of them get quite high tech. The one that surpassed them all was the simplest - the basic Tommee Tippee cup with a fold up spout. no 'no spill' valve or anything but DD very quickly learned to flip the spout up & down as she needed to.

omnishambles · 22/11/2010 20:10

Yes thats the one I meant too Mojo - dd still uses that one now quite often and shes 2.6.

umf · 22/11/2010 20:50

OP sounds like this is quite a common problem, and that it probably does take a while! wish i'd known that (and about mn) at the time.
