My 3 month old was in a perfect routine, he was going four hours between feeds (after postponing with water and dummies) and sleeping the 'proper' amount during the day with play time on his mat and after geting used to his cot recently was sleeping from 11ish to 7.

The last couple of days he has started his hungry crying after less than 3 hours (the time it takes to prepare and heat a bottle means it's 3 hours between feeds). Once he's fed he's sleepy straight away. He's still going though the night and now he goes from earlier because he's had all his milk sooner.

He gets very upset if i don't feed him immediatley. I've tried upping his amounts per feed but he nods off and often possets alot.

Should i just let him get on with it and demand feed and not be concerned by the sleeping or does anyone recommend i try to go 4 hours again ( as you can tell i refer, not rigidly, to gina ford's routine).

Also is it safe to add more formula powder than water to a feed in order to fill him up for longer. I know someone who did this but i don't think it's a good idea.

firstly, sounds like he's going through a growth spurt

personally, i'd feed on demand

never put more forula powder than recommended - it can make him constipated - much better to give him more to take if he wants it

If you're using formula, could you get a few cartons of that ready made up stuff, so you can just give one of those if he does seem hungry?

I agree with koala bear, sounds very much like a growth spurt!

ps. what i mean by "much better to give him more to take if he wants" is that it is better to make up more formula according to the instructions - for example, so instead of giving say 4 ounces, offering 5 or 6

i always offered more, and let my son take what he wanted, rather than sticking to a strict regime of "he must drink x amount"

Oh never never add more powder to the water... My SIL did this by accident and her boy was really ill for days!
He sounds like a hungry little fella though!! I'd do what Koalabear suggested, make up a 5 or 6oz bottle and let him drink until he's full up.. How many ounces is he taking per feed?
You get a step up milk for hungrier babies, but i don't know if he could have it at 3 months.. you could always enquire from your HV?

koalabear · 21/09/2005 13:58

oh yes, the hungry baby formula is good - i think you can have it pretty early - my SIL gave her son it at 2 weeks of age!

Thank you all.

He is on SMA white for hungry babies but i'm still mixing it with yellow. perhaps i should just give him the blue. he takes 6 ozs sometimes 7 but loses alot out the side of his mouth. he's also on cartons coz powder made him sick and carton milk seems heavier ? so more filling ? just a thought.

thanks again

C

Their tummies are still tiny, giving more per feed could overtax them. Would demand feed myself.
