This week has made me very grateful that I am "still" BF

DS (19 months) had an emergency admission to hospital this week. 5 hours in resuscitation room. Been diagnosed with something not so good Sad. Trauma all round. Had lots of nasty procedures and I was so so so so grateful to have the comfort and soothing of BF to give him.

The medical staff were wonderful and eventually took him off the bed, arranged the spaghetti junction of wires and things around me and did what they had to do (administering copious amount of drugs through arm canula) with him attached to me!

He has an infection now on top of everything else and wants to feed all the time (although there can't be much there-we were down to 1-2 feeds a day) and I am happy to be able to provide the fluids/nutrition that he is unable to take via solids and unwilling to take via other fluids atm.

i do often think of something like this happening and being unable to bf him if i stopped. it is like magic Grin.

(with a supply as established as this i would have thought you can go from 2 to 6 to 10 feeds a day as needed. certainly appears to be the case here.)

Gish how scary for youSad I am so sorry to hear that he has been disagnosed with something not good. I hope and pray it is something treatable.

Before I read your post I was about to post my own little story of feeding DS2 (23m) through his bad week of a cough and a mout ulcer, but it seems a little trite now!

And yes, I am sure there is plenty of milk for him.

Just like Provincial I had had a week where I was glad to be bfeeding. DD1 has been ill and DD2 hasn't suffered nearly as much. I know it could be down to a million different things ut I'm choosing to believe it was because she is bfed.

OP all the best to your DS

Liz79 · 18/11/2010 21:55

we had visitors at the weekend who brought a tummy bug with them, only baby DS (7m) and I escaped. DD (nearly 3) was least badly affected. Literally vomited 3 times on sat night and was fine. BOuncing around as normal. I choose to believe this is becaus ehe is stil bf and she was bf until 20m.

Hope your little one is OK op x

OP - Glad to hear your DS is out of hospital.

I was thinking about this subject this morning with my snuffly cold-ridden 21 month old. It's so good to be able to give such comfort 'on tap' when there's nothing else you can do.

JamieJay · 19/11/2010 00:01

OP - sorry to hear about your DS, glad he's home and hope everything goes well for you both.

Very minor compared to you but I've been grateful for breastfeeding this week as have had a horrible cold type bug and being able to just lie in bed with DD and feed her without worrying about getting up to make botles has been a god send.

TheProvincialLady · 19/11/2010 09:39

Well that is good newsSmile

My story wasn't going to be anything more interesting than DS2 having a bad cold and a big mouth ulcer, so he was miserable and unable to eat anything for a week despite being ravenous...so thank goodness for BF. But now I can add in the fact that he was sick all last night...do I win a prize!

Great story - dd3 has been in hospital all week with Bronchiolitis and I was desperate to bf her to get some fluids in her and comfort her but it was just too hard work for her especially with the tubes up her nose.

She categorically refused to latch on which made me feel awful so I know how good you must ve felt to be able to.
Hope your ds is ok- not much fun in hospital is it..
