Breastfeeding after an amnio

I am having an amniocetesis in 2 weeks (will be 16 weeks). I am still bfing DD (2).

I am supposed to take it easy for a couple of days, but can I breastfeed? I am worried it might give me/enhance contractions or something Confused.

Anyone know? The midwife at the hospital was a bit stumped.

I would think so. There's no information online. Is there a breastfeeding specialist midwife or health visitor at your local children centre? It might be worth calling to see if they have any info.

Personally I would think that as long as DD didn't kick / put pressure on your belly, and that you are not holding her weight entirely (ie, you're sitting / laying down to feed) you should be fine.

Hope the results are good.

Hello Mumsnet

Haven't posted for a long long time. Hope you are all okay. Am bumping this as am in the same boat.
Have had amnio this afternoon (had one last time, this is my second, was more uncomfortable but otherwise all fine so far).

But my doctor was perturbed/aghast I am still bf my DD2 as she says bf causes uterine contractions every time and these should be avoided (hence the no orgasm/sexual activity rule post amnio).

Anyone in health care or with exp out there who can advise on what I do for the next 5 days - will duration and frequency of bf make a big diff with oxytocin prod/contractions?

She also claimed that I really have to stop at 25 weeks to avoid going into labour early - but none of the tandem feeding sites have said that was necessary unless you were already deemed a risk - am I a risk because I am older (41)

Finally I am sneezing and coughing a lot because of a bad cold - is this bad for uterine recovery post amnio? Is uterine infection completely random, what causes it?

Thank you in advance x

Ok so she is wrong about having to stop post 25 weeks (more likely o be wrong about other bf stuff too?). SOME women are advised that it MAY be helpful to stop when they have a history of early labour. Actually there is little evidence that bf would make any difference, certainly bf makes no difference to normal pregnancy and labour outcomes (sex doesn't actually bring on labour either). I wouldn't expect that bf could affect your experience post amnio but don't know for sure. Arc, the charity might be the best people to talk to? Certainly I understood infection to be the biggest problem post amnio/cvs and bf won't affect that.

Hope you feel ok, had a cvs myself and it left me feeling pretty vulnerable.
