Thrush in breasts - anything I can do before GP opens on Mon?

DD2 has oral thrush. She was prescribed nystatin, which we have given her for the past week. I now have some new, odd shooting pains in my breasts in between feedings, and assume this is thrush. I'm not in that much pain to warrant a trip to out-of-hours, but in the meantime I wonder if there's any over the counter/ hippy herbal stuff I can try??

Hi
I had thrush with my ds and in the end after using many creams the doctor prescribed Flucozade, I think that what it is called, it is a pill which you take for thrush and was recommended to me by a breastfeeding counsellor, it worked really quickly. When i asked the pharmacist if this was the same as canesten oral treatment for thrush which you can buy over the counter he said it was. So not sure whether you want to pop out to the pharmacist and try that.

Also i found nystain not very effective and used daktarin oral gel instead also available over the counter. Not meant to be used on babies under 4 months because they can choke on it but I used it very carefully on my ds and it was fine.

thank you both.
will explore these options with pharmacist.

Grapefruit seed extract in water. Print off the breastfeeding Network leaflet on tgrush and take it in. Please try to get it treated agressively frm the start, you really don't want it to take hold.

Get Daktarin gel from chemist for ds - Nystatin isn't as good and contains sugar...

Daktarin isn't licenced for under 4 months due to the choking risk. The dr prescribed it for my ds (3 weeks) - measure a blob onto the back of your hand, smear small amounts between your fingers and smear it al over his mouth - no lumps go in his mouth.

Cut sugar and yeast from your diet Smile

get some strong probiotics, worked for me last time after the drugs failed...

PaulineMole · 13/11/2010 14:05

thanks moonstorm. will google for that leaflet. would a small pharmacy be likely to stock grapefruit seed extract or do i need to buy online?

I took acidophilus (spelling?) .. It is good bacteria that fights that bad stuff but needed 28 day course of 150 mg fluconzole (spelling?) to get rid of it. If it is thrush, get the flucon... As it is so SO sore when it becomes deeprooted. Also recommended is washable breast pads changed frequently & washed in 90 degree water. Good luck

thanks for all of this. lovely midwife has got GP to prescribe fluconazole for me and more nystatin for DD. she mentioned that daktarin used to be prescribed and was more effective, but is confident that the nystatin shouls do the trick once i'm on the correct dose of fluconazole.

Put the dose of Nystatin into a bowl, then keep dipping your finger into it and smearing it into her mouth. Before I was given the Daktarun, I was told this was the best way, otherwise they swallow the Nystatin too quickly.
