small tongue, clicky lartch and reflux!

Have had more than my fair share of help on here but have a new question....

went to BF cafe today and saw BF counsellor who noted my DS 3 weeks has a v small tongue (and slightly recessed chin) which he never ever pokes out and which can't extend over the gum. He has a clicky latch, more so on one side than the other. he is swallowing lots of air feeding which is making him uncomfy, and this seems to compound the reflux he has also been diagnosed with and which he is now on meds for :(

is there anything i can do to help improve the latch to take acccount of his tiny recessed tongue?? his frenulum does not look tight and no-one (many have looked) can see a tongue tie.

splatt to be honest I don't know, the Lactation Consultant did explain what she could see to me but I couldn't really understand it. I think they are quite difficult to spot to be honest.

Maybe worth seeing one (a LC) who knows about these things and who could check properly - have to say several healthcare people and a BF counsellor saw my son's tongue and said it was just shorter than normal...

Splatt, deffo see someone else for bf information as a nipple shield in this situation is not a good idea in my humble opinion.
And read the links already here on the thread. You may also want to phone a breast feeding helpline regarding the nipple shield thing and possible TT as a starter as I am no expert but I do have doubts Bout shields going by what you've said.

TBH I've stopped with the shield. It was doing my head in. Whilst the counsellor was here DD was tired and I think full and kept falling a sleep and loosing her latch. Normally she's fine and I'm not in discomfort so have dropped the shield. Will raise the posterior tongue tie issue.

Incidentally. How do you find a lactation consultant. I presume they work privately, so how much do they charge. Thanks

splatt, you can find one thru the lactation consultants breat britain website:

www.lcgb.org/

if you scroll down to the red 'find a consultant' bit, there is also a 'find a tongue tie divider' list of contacts.

some work for the nhs i think, e.g. at baby cafes and in hospitals, as well as working privately. the one I saw privately charged £60 for a circa 2 hour consultation, plus mileage.

Hi, I know this post was a long time ago. But did you get help? My little one is 10
Weeks old and his tongue is set far back and is very small. Sounds similar. We are worried about speech later in life. He isn’t latching well
Either but working hard to breastfeed him despite the pain.
