my DS was bord 6 days ago by emergency CS. I have a slightly low blood count. the baby latches on well, but i have no milk. I have tried expressing, and continue to do so, i somethimes get nothing, and occassionally get up to 5 ml. meanwhile DS is on Aptamil. He seems fine and feeds well, but i'd really like to feed him myself, is there anything i can do to kick off my milk?

Please help.

You need to see a bf counsellor asap. Try NCT or La Leche League.

Expressing is no indication of your milk supply but unless milk is being efficiently extracted every few hours (especially during the night) then you wont produce it.

He needs to feed from you to stimulate your milk supply - the more he feeds the sooner your milk will come in. When you have a CS it often takes a little while for milk to come in. If you can go to bed with him, skin to skin and let him feed as much as he wants.

Not sure about how to stop the bottles but am sure someone will come along soon who can help with that.

You need rl help and as soon as possible.

Milk works on supply and demand. If your baby is not suckling at the breast, then your body does not know to make milk.

Inability to express tells you nothing.

I'd see a breastfeeding counsellor as soon as possible who can help you out.

Kazkabs I bf both of mine and with DC1 I couldn't express a drop, yet he was getting enough. The baby is much more efficient at getting the milk out that we are.

Agree with the others that you need a bfing counsellor and quick.

Here are the numbers for the NCT, La Leche League and Association of Breastfeeding Mothers

thank you everyone, I will ring the counsellors, and continue to perserver.

Kazkabs

If you can get him to latch on - how do you know there is no milk going down?

Also, - where is your midwife care in all this?

Ineedsomesleep · 09/11/2010 13:05

Kazkabs how are you getting on now?

thisisyesterday · 09/11/2010 13:08

kazkabs, feeding him formula will not heol you produce more mikl!

milk is made on a supply and demand basis. the amount of colostrum you produce is really small, but ok for him.
newborn babies generally feed a LOT, you would expect every couple of hours, day and night at least.

this stimulates your milk supply. if he hasn't been doing that then you are not stimulating your body to produce milk.

my advice is to feed him direct from breast as often as you can to get your supply going. and yes, of course speak to a bfc or see one face to face if you can

Sorry to read about your difficulties, OP. Good suggestions on getting help - where is your midwife?

If your baby is not feeding effectively and often, then you will need to express at least 8 x in 24 hours. Anything less and you will undermine your choice to bf.

But obv, getting him to latch direct is the best way to get things going, and for this you really do need some real life help.
