Can't get dd2 to settle in the evening

DD2 is 6 weeks and I'm struggling to settle her in the evening. she basically cluster feeds on and off from 7 till gone midnight, maybe with micro sleeps in between. she aslo gets really fussy wanting to be on the breast but squirming and pulling off. then we have the whole fandango of trying to get her in the hammock and staying asleep. she tends to go in, appear to be asleep then minutes later wakes up.

last night she was awake till 1.30am. i tend to take her up to bed around 9.30-10 in the hope that she will settle down. we swaddle her up but end up playing pass the baby as she fusses and i get more & more frustrated and tired and she fusses.

The thing is, she then sleeps for 7 hours so I am loath to mess with things too much, but by midnight I am getting really tired. I could really do with those 7 hours being brought forward a bit. I don't mind the cluster feeding but wonder if I am doing something wrong or need to try harder to get her to settle.

any advice? I am loath to instill a strict bedtime routine, I don't mind going with the flow, but wondering if I could do things a bit better.

Have you tried white noise? We were having the same issues, DS is 9wks tomorrow and some evenings was very like you say - he has never fallen asleep other than being fed to sleep (unless we are out in car or pram). Any way we had an evening just like you describe last night, and I just gave up and switched light off, put him down so I could get ready for bed, and put on new white noise cd I'd bought. 2 mins later I come back in to the bedroom and he was fast asleep!

Might try that. My mum bought a bear which makes various sounds. She keeps doing this frantic turny head thing which I don't think is rooting, but not sure if it is tiredness or maybe wind?

Why don't they come with a manual?

Could be either, if in doubt we try winding, there always seems to be another burp in there lol.

A lactation consultant I saw (primarily for matters unrelated) told us that this kind of fussiness is hugely common in young babies. I think there's some info on kellymom about it. It can be quite worrying but I think it helps to know it's so common. :)

Cluster feeding is normal breastfeeding behaviour

My DD did it BUT never gave me a long stretch of sleep after it

I know it is hugely exhausting but it does pass

If you can go to bed so at least you are both resting

Hang on in there Smile
