pain in right breast after feeding

Hi,
I have been getting pricking pain in my right breast after feeding-it was worse in the beginning and now my baby is 3 months. It is coming again and happens on the right side inside my breast after feeding.GP advised to take painkillers like paracetamol and said it will go away.It gets hard when the shooting pain starts in the night after i feed my baby as this means I cannot sleep for hours even after taking painkiller: I have tried to pump(do not like it)but this is not helping. My latching is ok and I do not have any pain in my nipples, please does anyone else have this kind of problem?not much on this issue on websites-what can I do about this as both me and my baby are getting on well with breastfeeding but this occasional pain is so annoying.

I'm experiencing the same thing and wondered if he was latching on properly but as i get the pain when i'm not even feeding it's definitely something else. And it's not that kind of hard 'ooh i need to feed' feel you get.

It sounds like it could be thrush.

There's good stuff on the breastfeeding network website. See here

Hope you get it sorted.

I said the same thing crikeybadger, when aasifa originally posted in a different topic. I also commented that I used to get this from time to time, but as it wasn't painful enough to need painkillers I never looked into it further. Is there any other possible cause, especially since aasifa says it's occasional?

My 1st thought would have been thrush, but if you are sure its not and if your boob is getting hard in that area it could be that you have a bit of a blockage in that area or that that "segment" of your boob wasn't properly drained during the feed.

I would try some wet heat, shower head on the area / sit in bath and very gentle massage towards nipple, hand express a bit and see if it helps.

I would then try to feed the next time on that side and with the babe the other way round, so if you are using a cradle hold try a rugby hold, 3 of mine were able to drain the breast much better in a rugby hold and because of the angle it may help that segment more. Hope that made sense and helps.:)

Well done for b/feeding btw :)

Oh and afaik nurofen is also fine to take read the label/ check here and is an anti-inflammatory so may be of help :)

mmm, not sure then really gaelic, the bfn leaflet says that for thrush the pain is after every feed and extreme, not just uncomfortable. Confused

I had something that sounds similar (on one side, in the boob tissue not the nipple, often appeared after feeds for ages. Not excruitiating but painful enough to stop me sleeping. Not 'I need to feed' fullness.)

Thought it could be thrush but went to excellent breast feedimg clinic and they said is very common when boob not being drained properly as kickarse suggested. My ds just wasn't latching quite right on smaller boob. Never had it since the latch improved.

Well yes, that would make sense as we've always found it more difficult on that side. It's not been so bad recently.
