I had this yesterday, but by taking prompt action I seem to have shaken it. I think the NHS website said things like get plenty of rest (HA!!!), keep your fluids up, take paracetamol, warm bath or shower and make sure your breast gets emptied. Good luck!

Hi bumper Smile

Sorry to hear you are feeling a bit pooey. Best thing is to feed as much as possible from that side, massaging towards nipple as LO feeds. Heat is good too and you can take ibuprofen to reduce inflammation.

BfN leaflet is good to keep handy.

how are things otherwise? Do you FB? There are a bunch of us chatting regularly over there and it'd be good to hear from you.

Thanks both. Hi daisy, saw you on a thread the other day and was going to say hi but didn't want to hijack. I don't go on FB but will PM you.

The massage and stuff is a good idea, but I can't put the bloody baby down! Will see how it goes and try it later. HV coming round today later. Does it sound like mastitis? Or just something and nothing? Never had it before.

It could be the start of it, but if you've caught it early then it might not develop any further.

If it's bacterial you might need ABs, but if it's down to a blockage, or not emptying the breast fully, then getting the milk flowing properly should clear it.

Bacterial generally leads to red patches or lines on your boobs, rather than just lumpiness.

Have a look on kellymom as well; good info there regarding whether or not ABs are actually needed.

How is her latch?

from my own POV, I had lots of blockages and mastitis with DS2, and eventually discovered he had a lip tie.

Rest as much as you can, lots of fluids and try and get things flowing as much as possible. Good Luck xx

Lumpiness seems to have gone down with another feed.

I had this yesterday and I was convinced I would need antibiotics, and it got worse as the day went on. A sort of really wide area of hardness and lumpiness. I kept feeding and massaging but to no avail. Then this morning I had a really long (ish) hot shower which i set to pummel (on my lumpy boob) and did a feed and it disappeared like magic.

margherita76 · 03/11/2010 15:07

actually i also took some ibuprofen which may have helped too...

LacksDaisies · 04/11/2010 20:15

how are things today bumper? I hope it's settled down some.

Bumperlicious · 05/11/2010 14:21

|Well it didn't turn into mastitis, another feed and the lumpiness went away and I didn't get any more symptoms. Still uncomfortable with the latching though. Just can't seem to get it right :(

has she been checked for tongue and lip ties bumper? bumble was about three months old before they finally conceded that it was his top tight frenum causing all my issues. It did loosen off by itself, but it was always a bit uncomfortable. It wasn't until he burst it himself when he fell over in the park at 14 monthsish that I realised just how uncomfortable it had actually been. It was always worse on side as well.
