sleepy feeder

Hi, any advice most welcome...... DD2 is 6 days old and, although she was feeding really well at first, has become a very sleepy feeder. I know it's normal for babies this new to sleep lots, but it means that she falls asleep within minutes of being put on the breast. THis has the knock on effect of leaving me engorged and her having to be put on and off the breast (making me sore, particularly at night when she feeds like this for hours!) She also fusses at the breast - arms flailing, legs kicking and detaching/reattaching herself (not always correctly, so I have to take her off and it all starts again). I've tried winding her but to no avail.....HELP I am so sleep deprived and with 2 other DC's it's been hard going

Hi,
there's some suggestions for a sleepy baby in the middle of this article.

Would swaddling help with the flailing arms?

Hullo, congratulations on your new baby :)

It could be worth seeing a BFCounselor to see if your latch needs tweeking if she on off a lot. I think probably some RL help would be could in this situation.

tanmu - could be within normal, could be a sign your feeding needs amending....call a midwife?

Is your baby producing several large yellow poos each day?

tanmu82 · 02/11/2010 14:53

yes, her poos are at the yellow, seedy stage. She also wees frequently. I've had the latch checked several times already, and I try tactics such as changing her nappy when she gets sleepy, feeding her naked except for nappy. The knock on effect is that she is awake and then cluster feeds all night. DH snores next to me whilst I feed for hours on little to no sleep......
