Nipple turns purple when expressing! Vasospasm?

That's pretty much it. My right nipple turns a lovely shade of deep, bruised purple while I am expressing. (Baby doesn't really latch to this one for any length of time, so I don't know if the effect carries over to BF.)

It doesn't hurt, and the pink colour comes back with 20 seconds or so. Is this vasospasm?

I think vasospasm is white. Could it just be the suction drawing blood to the surface?

My nipple's always swell and turn purple when expressing, but it's not painful so I just ignore it.

Mine too - I would say no, it's not vasospasm, as it doesn't cause you any pain. I think it's just the effect of the pump suction. My nipples tend to be a bit swollen when I detach from the pump but they go down within a minute. Sometimes a bit longer if I've been absentmindedly watching telly, and pumped a bit harder than usual/than is ideal...

I had vasospasm in early pregnancy, and have had it before in cold weather. It is pretty darn painful! Like being pinched very hard. Nipples tended to go white first, then bluey-purple, before eventually going back to pink, when they stopped hurting. The whole cycle usually takes a good 20 mins to half an hour.

Thanks everyone! The purple is alarming, but like I said, doesn't hurt. :)
