Anyone feel 'not quite right' while feeding?

I can't explain it but when I am feeding DD2 (5 weeks) I just feel a bit not quite right, I can't explain it, I just get a funny feeling all over my body. It's a sort of combination of slight nausea if I have just eaten, sudden extreme tiredness and slight feelings of arousal (not strong, I used to get this strongly with DD1 in the beginning and absolutely hated it!).

Anyone else feel funny when they are feeding? Is it just hormonal? Will it get better?

All I can feel right now is DSs two new teeth. I remember with one feeling light headed and sleepy, I always feel like I could fall asleep feeding.

And I have a raging thirst, am always thirsty.

starshaker · 30/10/2010 22:11

I did and thats how i explained it. I just didnt feel right. Felt dizzy and sick and well just not right. I needed to express though and thought it was that. I managed to bf (express) the twins for 6 weeks then my milk went and im ashamed to admit i was relieved that my body made the decission that i was too scared to make.

Not that im saying you should stop bf for from it. I was told it gets easier but i never got the chance to find out.

Im sure somebody with some good advice will be along soon

Yes I had that, much more with dd (2nd child) than with ds (1st). I thought it was probably a hormone / oxytocin rush but it was like being on drugs - almost like that 'whoosh' feeling you get when you are given an anaesthetic before surgery, just before you pass out! It was pretty intense but it did settle down - can't remember exactly when but it was only for the first couple of months and I ended up feeding her till she was nearly 2.

I remember an incredibly strong but fleeting feeling of thirst/longing/heartache... can't really describe it. Just with letdown for a second, then it would go. Happened for both my dds, more so in the earlier months. Wierd, must be something hormonal.

Bumperlicious · 30/10/2010 22:17

It's not too bad, I just don't like the feeling of being tired and not being able to sleep, or that slight arousal feeling, I find it really frustrating. Also, I know I would feel just as bad (and cranky) if I hadn't eaten but when I have I just feel a little bit sick. Glad it's not just me though.

Oh and it doesn't help that I have a really painful let down, like needles! Hope that settles down too.

With both DS and DD I came over pretty woozy and incredibly sleepy for the whole feed. Still do sometimes. At night it scared me into not b/f.

People talk about pleasurable feelings when b/f. Is this true? Pleasurable how? I'm either falling asleep or I feel nothing at all.

lukewarmcupoftea · 30/10/2010 22:22

I had that too - a very forceful letdown, lots of oversupply issues to start with. I think it was when that settled down (about 3 months?) that the wierd letdown feeling stopped as well. All must be linked to hormones going crackers.

Congratulations by the way!

systemsaddict · 30/10/2010 22:23

Yes my letdown was like needles too - again that settled down after a couple of months - it was a real surprise to me as first time round I actually couldn't feel the letdown at all! must be hormonal?

Bumperlicious · 30/10/2010 22:31

Thanks all

Gaelic with dd1 i used to get proper feelings of arousal, but it wasn't pleasurable, it was very frustrating!

I had this and now at 12 weeks it has definitely calmed down. I never had nausea or painful letdown with my other two and so it has been a new experience for me.

Quite pleased it has finally calmed down.

Drinking water def helped the nausea.

Hopefully you'll be the same and it'll calm down after a while.

sethstarkaddersmummyreturns · 30/10/2010 22:34

google D-MER and yes it will get better

gaelicsheep · 30/10/2010 22:35

Oh gosh, I would hate that! Horrible.

Bumperlicious · 30/10/2010 22:50

Wow just looking at d-mer, that hollowness/sinking of the stomach is exactly how i feel. Really bizarre, but good to know it's if not normal at least recognised. Thanks for the tip.

Thinking about it i get the dread and anxiety too. i thought it was the pain of latching but it is much better now and i still get it.

Oh wow, d-mer is it exactly. Nice to know it has a name! Thanks for that.

sethstarkaddersmummyreturns · 31/10/2010 09:09

it is meant to be very rare but from the number of threads about it on here I think it is just not talked about much.

SHRIIIEEEKPoolingBearBlood · 31/10/2010 09:11

I get this but not when feeding, the dread/hollowness and then when I come round I need a fizzy drink. Have had it since being a child.

lukewarmcupoftea · 31/10/2010 09:55

I think because it's such a fleeting thing, I kind of forgot about it until the next time. So I wouldn't think to talk about it unless someone reminded me (like this thread), probably why it seems rare.

ISNT · 31/10/2010 10:01

Yes I felt peculiar when feeding at the beginning and also had toe-curling let down pain. With me, both of them got gradually better and better until without even noticing they just weren't there any more. Gone by around (hazy memory) 2 months maybe.

BookcaseFullofBooks · 31/10/2010 11:06

I get the same odd feeling. It also feels like gentle tickles while DD feeds.

Ineedsomesleep · 31/10/2010 11:53

Haven't read the whole thread so please forgive me if I'm repeating.

I only ever got the nausea if I was a bit dehydrated, all the rest sounds perfectly normal and will calm down eventually [hsmile]
