I'm on Fluconazole (but wasn't given a big first dose) and ds is on Nystatin - dr won't prescribe Daktarin.

After 2-3 tablets, the pain had dropped from a 9/10 tp3, but after the 4th, the pain is as bad as ever - does this mean it's not working, or it's not thrush? Or could it just be getting worse before better? My nipples are so sore and my breasts and nipples burn inbetween feeds. I#v been on loads of antibiotics since labour, have been anaemic and hgave had vaginal thrush through most of my pregnancy - all which predispose mr to thrush.

But, the nipple is usually longer on the tongue side after a feed, which suggests latch - what can I do? Loads of people have watched me feed and say I'm doing it right, and ds has been checked for tongue tie.

Last night I was in tears from the agony. I loved breastfeeding last time, now I fear it Sad

Hi Moonstorm, and poor you! I'm answering not because I can help at this point, but because I think I may have the same thing, so perhaps we can solve our hell together?

My left breast is very sore - the nipple burns whilst feeding (like it did when I first started). But the pain doesn't really decrease during feeding (and like you could cry), and I am aware of a slight throbbing all day. No signs of thrush at all, and dr thinks it's an infection so have been put on anti-biotics. Not making any difference! Have checked and checked again, nipple looks exactly the same as the 'good' one.

How old is your ds? Mine is 14 weeks. Do you think we are latching on wrong all of a sudden? DS seems healthy and fine.

Maybe you don't have thrush? Do you have any other symptoms?

I'm going to go back to the Dr on Monday and get a second opinion, so maybe do the same? If I learn anything I'll let you know!

Take care. xx

Thank you . My ds is just 2 weeks, so prime time for latch issues, but I get the throbbing/ burning all day as wewll. My nipples are very pink on both sides and a little shiny.

I read that vasospasm can be confused with thrush, but also that thrush can cause vasospasm... maybe have a look into this.

I would rather go through labour again than this!!!!!! Hope we get it sorted x

My sympathies - breast thrush is awful.

Go back to the doctor's if it is still bad and insist on more fluconazole at a higher dose. I found the woman doctor I saw much happier to do this than the male one whom I felt didn't really believe me.

I used re-usable breast pads for leaks which I changed even if they got slightly wet, and boil washed them and my pajama tops after every wearing. Then - and I probably shouldn't have done this but I did - I bought some double strength canesten at the chemists and used that after each feed but was very, very, careful to wash it off before feeding DD.

Good luck with it.

I can't really read a thread like this and not respond as I had thrush terribly with my newborn DS. I too am prone to vaginal thrush and had a really serious bout of it postnatally too, plus abx in labour and postnatally, so prime thrush breeding ground!

I delayed treatment as I thought it was a latch issue- which it partly was. However as DS got bigger and better at latching on the thrush got worse and my nipples went this awful vibrant, shiny pink and the right one eventually cracked deeply. I got the wrong prescription at first, cried at every single feed, was either thinking about pain or actually in pain and it really was worse than labour- because it felt never ending.

What I did in the end:

  • Got the BfN leaflet recommended drugs and doses to the letter. Kicked up a bit of a fuss in order to do so. DS was 'too young' (load of crap, I would not let a gob of gel choke my own baby) for the Daktarin gel at first so he had the Nystatin drops, I had Daktarin cream and loading dose plus follow up doses of fluconazole. THREE times. By the last course of treatment DS had the Daktarin gel.
  • I went on www.kellymom.com and looked at all the alternative herbal hoo ha and got just about everything. If memory serves me right: grapefruitseed tablets, acidophilus tablets, garlic tablets, grapefruitseed extract

-cut out ALL sugar from my diet, including fruit and white foods like bread, white rice, white pasta(allowed myself three prunes a day, whoop de do!)

-cut out yeast, so all breads and alcohol and alcohol free beer

-ate lots of live yoghurt

-washed all milk covered things and DS's nappies at high temp, changed bras and towels daily (chore!)

-changed to non plastic backed breastpads which definately helped, changed them often

For about a week at the start I expressed off the worst side to keep up supply.

DS had terrible thrushy nappy rash which cleared in about a week, and his mouth never got too bad. He thrived growth wise which was a big part of what kept me going, plus bf was really, truly important to me so I really wanted to struggle through but it took my absolute all at times.

In the end I went on holiday and swam in the sea every day, kept up all the herbal stuff and the no sugar/yeast and that's when it went. DS was 5 months old, but the worst of it was at the start. To get rid of the crack, which wouldn't heal due to the thrush, I used silverette nipple covers, which healed it fast (once latch was sorted)

I hope this helps, if nothing else then in an 'always someone worse than you' way!

The only thing I didn't try was gentian violet- not easy to get in the UK now and not really recommended for babies but tbh I might have given it a go.

It did go and for me it was worth it.

Best of luck.

I second the Breastfeeding network thrush leaflet. We were stuck in the neverending thrush cycles from when ds was about 10 days until he was 8 weeks old - it affected him worse than me in our case, so I never needed fluconazole. My HV told me nystatin was rubbish for treating thrush - what cleared it for us in the end was:

daktarin oral gel 4 times a day for ds - he was prescribed it at 10 days old no problem, but I believe you can get it over the counter.

canestan (clotrimazole) cream for my nipples - think I applied it three times a day after feeds, wiping off any excess before feeding ds again

canestan HC (clotrimazole and hydrocortisone) cream for ds's thrush nappy rash - initially we were prescribed daktarin cream which improved it but didn't clear in, the canestan HC did

fastidious hygiene, hot washing nappies, sheets, breast pads (change really frequently)

Unfortunately we kept getting prescribed things in dribs and drabs - it was only when we treated everything together that it finally cleared.

vinocollapso · 30/10/2010 16:01

Thanks everyone for all of this - it's made me think that I don't have thrush (as I have none of these other symptoms and ds has none either), but I will be going back to the Dr once the anti-biotics have finished for another opinion.

I'm so sorry to hear that all of you have had such a horrible time, it's made me a feel a bit stupid, but the pain is so acute it must be something, surely?

Moonstorm - good luck and I hope it clears up soon. xx

coldcomfortHeart · 30/10/2010 16:31

Just a note- you don't have to both show symptoms but you must both be treated or it'll just keep going back and forth between you.

vinocollapso · 31/10/2010 07:07

Thanks, coldcomfortHeart - is it possible to only have one boob infected, though? If it were thrush would it be affecting both?

Bloodberrybatbait · 31/10/2010 07:18

I used Grapefruit seed extract when I had thrush with DD1 and DD2. I tried all the ususal things and it just got worse. A week for GSE tablets and extract and I was thrush free - I kept up the GSE tablets and liquid ofr another week just to be sure. I took 2 GSE tablets 3 times a day and diluted 20drops of GSE liquid in 25mls of water. I used the liquid to wipe down my nipples before and after each feed and I used it on the tip of a cotton bud ( I also got some sterile mouth sponges on a stick from a pharmacy) to wipe out DDs mouth again before and after all feeds. It was time consuming and we just stayed home for the first week so I could ensure I did it every feed but it was so worth the hassle.

Bloodberrybatbait · 31/10/2010 07:24

The other thing I did was spend time with my bra off and my beasts open to the air - thrush thrives in warm damp areas so a bit of light and fresh air help too.

Caro1302 · 31/10/2010 21:44

The only thing that worked for me was acidophilus- the very strong stuff, 4 billion count. I had recurrent thrush and was in agony but within a couple of days of taking acidophilus I was ok again. You have my sympathy, nothing can compare with the pain every single feed.

MrsTimeOut · 31/10/2010 22:30

I had thrush from when dd was about 3 weeks old til she was 10 wks. Horrendous time. The amount of times I researched weaning to give up bfing for good cos I couldn't stick the pain. I had deep rooted thrush so had no external symptoms and dd had no thrush at all. What worked for me was 28 day course of 150mg od diflucan. V high dose & unususl script. My bf group leader rang my doc to get it prescribed & she took some convincing. Pharmisist also double checked before dispensing. Tbh, daktarin, nystatin etc didn't do anything for me. My nipples were raw & the pain when feeding went right round to my back & felt as if dd was going to suck the milk duct out of my boob. I noticed a difference a few days after taking diflucan and couldn't believe what an enjoyable experience bfing could be. Dd now 16 wks & bfing going great. Don't let this slip and insist on getting the right diagnosis & treatment. Good luck
