How long per feed?

Ok, so DD is now 9 days old, latching and feeding well.
My question is how long should I be expecting each feed to take. Generally she seems to have 20-25 mins on one side then 10-15 on the other. Think this is probably reasonable. But this morning we started at 9:15 and despite de latching herself a couple of times she still seems to be hungry. Do I just keep going?

splatt - the answer to your question is 'as long as your baby tells you he needs' and this is massively variable :)

It is absolutely normal, especially for a new baby, to come off, appear to have had sufficient, and then perk up and want more minutes later...and to do it again and again.

Hope this helps.

Yes just keep going, all sounds v.normal :)

My first 45mins-1hr total per feed for first 16 weeks ish then down to 20mins over time, ds2 10-20mins from birth until now at 7 weeks and only takes one side.

How long is a piece of string? DS used to take over 2 hours per feed when he was first born, dd managed to empty both sides in 20 minutes from the get go. They're all so different. At 9 days old my philosophy was if in doubt, stick a nipple in their mouth and leave them to it :o

HeadFairy - yes me too, in fact I stuck with that theory for several months - made life much easier :)

2 hours and my boobs are just plain sore!

It is hard work to start with, I won't deny that. Your boobs will get used to it though, and as her mouth gets a little bigger it will be more comfortable.

They have lots of growth spurts at this early stage, so all this time at the breast is your DD signalling your body to produce more milk. It always helped me to know that there was a reason for it!

Hang in there, you are doing brilliantly and it will get easier :)

yeah, despite ds's terrible latch (probably why feeds too so long) I didn't get much discomfort - apart from the toe curling pain just as he latched on for the first couple of weeks which I think most people get. Unfortunately Alibabbaa, I didn't realise that for a good few weeks. Didn't make the same mistake with dd, every whimper and she'd get a nipple shoved in her mouth :o
