another poo question (sorry!)

my dd2 (4 weeks today, ebf) has had a few blood streaked nappies over the last day or so. It is mixed in with greeny poos and there isn't a great deal of it. She is feeding well and I have been trying to ensure she gets enough hind milk by feeding first from the side we finished last feed on.

I remember my dd1 having this once or twice and was told she was just straining. Is this likely to be all it is? I will ask HV at clinic tomorrow but wondered if anyone had wise words. Particularly if anyone thinks it might be something I am eating that disagrees with her?

cheers in advance.

My DD had this for probably 5 weeks.
I had her poo tested for infection and it was clear.

She had thrush (oral - so through her guts) and I think I had it in my breasts. My theory is that the yeast made her guts more gassy, which led to violent explosive poos and the blood. Once the thrush had gone, normal service resumed.

Does her poo smell yeasty at all?

thanks Haliborange - i will have to have a smell next time. I do suffer with thrush although never had it in my breasts - are there symptoms? She is a very gassy baby too.

Latching on was very painful for me (a sort of 10 second toe curler which made me shriek) but that was the only symptom I had. Eventually the baby developed white goo on her tongue but that wasn't for a bit. Until then I couldn't fathom why latching hurt so much.

DS2 had green poo streaked with blood and mucus. He was pooing 6+ times a day, not producing much each time. I was fobbed off for ages by the GP and HV saying he was constipated when he didn't appear to be straining.
Eventually he was diagnosed as cows milk protein intolerant - he was reacting to milk through the breastmilk. Other signs were that he was gassy, there were times when he managed to shoot poo all the way out of his back, the poo was separated but didn't really smell of anything and he kept arching his back where his tummy was sore. The dodgy poo wasn't constant, he'd have a bad few days then be ok for a few days.
See your GP, take pictures of the bloody nappies to show the GP and a record of how often and also try to think about whether you'd eaten more of a particular food in the days before the problem - DS2's poo changed when I went from having toast for breakfast to cereal, which increased my cow's milk intake.

I took the bloody nappies with me to the GP as evidence! They didn't seem to mind too much...

Thanks cake - I did read somewhere about the intolerance thing. Will keep a diary for a few days!

Might make an appt tom for docs and show the nappies then. Trouble is, now I think I can sense thrush symptoms but what you describe cake, sounds exactly like my dd - we have had about 10 poos in each 24 hour cycle since she was born - and she is clearly in pain sometimes, its really hard to wind her and I can already tell when she is about to poo as she wakes if sleeping with a blood curdling scream (each day at 5.30am is the most constant one of these!)

did have lots of cheese for lunch..... how long will it take to get through to milk? She did a nasty nappy about 6 hours after this?

I'm not sure how long it takes to get through to milk, sorry. The screams before pooing sounds really scary, I hope you get some help from your GP. A lot of GPs seem a bit cynical about allergies and intolerances - I was told by mine that BF babies couldn't possibly be allergic to milk.
If it does turn out that your DD has a milk problem, you can keep BFing by removing milk from your diet. I've been dairy-free since January and it is a lot less difficult than I feared. Have a look at the allergies board on here, there are lots of knowledgeable and supportive people who helped me so much when I was trying to get my head around it.

Thanks - will investigate allergies board and look into going diary free for a bit to see if it makes any difference.
