Rubbish latch breast and bottle - taking in air - whats wrong?

My 10 week old DS and I have had a difficult start with breastfeeding. Not unusual I know.

We had a status quo with combination feeding two botles a day and the rest direct breastfeeding by about 6 weeks and he began to gain weight reasonably though not stunningly well.

What I have begun to wonder is why we struggle so baldy with his latch including with bottle feeding.

We have had so much help and I work really hard to follow the advice on positioning and he seems to have a good latch now on the breast. But breast feeding still takes forever and it is quite rare for him to unlatch himself and appear satisfied ....more likely he'll fall asleep.

On the bottle he invariable feeds very noisly and takes in a lot of air.

He has been checked for tongue tie but I am wondering now if thats the problem. If not what else could it be?

I would go back and keep going back to your HV until you are happy. Having said that I think bfing isn't as text book as its made out to be and this might be just how he feeds.

Try and find a proper breastfeeding expert. Most areas have a drop in clinic somewhere.Poor you. Good luck.

My DD2 was the same - m/w checked for tongue tie and said she didn't have one.

It was only at 14 weeks when I saw a photo of her tongue that PIL had happened to snap that I became convinced she did have a tongue tie. It was diagnosed at a drop in clinic and snipped.

DD2 had a subtle tongue tie that wasn't easy to spot unless you know what you're talking about (pics on profile still I think).

Main signs were in the way she fed - fed for a long time, never satisfied, clicked and kind of slid off a lot after a good start (think she used to really work hard for a few minutes then get tired and keep slipping off). She clicked and dribbled when bottle feeding too.

If you are anywhere near Luton the L and D hospital do a drop in where you can get it diagnosed. DD2s was diagnosed and snipped within 5 days.

My ds is 11 weeks and almost always falls asleep on the breast - in fact he has just done so now, after feeding on and off for the last hour or so! He's also a very noisy feeder - gulping, clicking, slurping - and his latch has never been "textbook". BUT, it seems to work for us, he's generally content, gaing weight etc and feeding him is painfree.
