Green poo in 3 month old?

HollyFP · 24/10/2010 22:48

Over the last few days my 3 month old DD has been doing green poos most of the time (only a couple are normal yellow). She now poos 3 or 4 times a day, when before we were on one every day or two.
She has also been feeding for less time although same amount of feeds per day.
I read somewhere on here this could be due to too much foremilk...? I guess this would make sense with the shorter feeds...but could it be anything else?

If it is due to too much foremilk, what's the remedy? I did have issues with oversupply when DD was a few weeks old but it has been fine since then. If I try to get her to feed from the same side again (to get hindmilk) will this not confuse my supply into thinking I should produce less milk? That's what I did to sort out the oversupply issue.

DD has been putting on good weight throughout, although I haven't had her weighed for two weeks so not sure if this has affected her since.

Sorry for the epic poo post Confused

Green poo and too much foremilk rings a bell with me. If you can get your own let-down going, you could always express off a little foremilk first and then feed DD, that shouldn't affect your supply.

HollyFP, my understanding of this is that in a healthy baby, green poo can be a sign that the baby is drinking more fore milk than hind milk. However, I also don't think that you have to worry too much about the foremilk/hindmilk issue if your DD is gaining weight and has plenty of wet and dirty nappies.

My DD frequently had green poos between 4-6 months. During this time feeds were much shorter so I put it down to her consuming more fore milk than hind milk. I just started to make sure that we started a feed on the boob that we last finished on and I did notice a difference in the colour of poos.

Thanks for the replies, I will try both suggestions!

My DS2 frequently did green poos at around that age. I solved it by starting a feed on the side we finished on last time so each side had a turn of going first. HV wasn't concerned.

I second what has already been said. I ended up block feeding with dd2 where I only used one boob for a 4 hour period before switching to the other and that helped too.

If these suggestions don't solve things and your LO is distressed as well, perhaps with mucus in her poo too, consider whether she is intolerant to dairy in your diet.

My DS did this for a while. I read about foremilk/hindmilk, but nothing I did made any difference. I wondered if it was because he had a cold.

It went as mysteriously as it came a few weeks later.

my 3 month old has also hadgreen poos for a couple of weeks now, and changed from pooing maybe once a week to pooing at every feed. this all coincided with a cold and his second set of jabs. his feeding patterns haven't changed much, so am not worrying too much - everything i've read online says changes in poo are pretty normal.

Often people start worrying about fore and hind milk when in fact it's just a red herring. Babies normally shorten their feeds as they get older so could be coincidence. Causes for green poos include developmental reasons (caused by increased saliva), teething, a cold (swallowing excess snot etc), or mum pigging out on 3 boxes of chocolates.

Ask me how I know about that last one Grin

Just keep going as you are, sounds like you're doing just fine :)

HollyFP · 25/10/2010 14:35

[hgrin] Jemjabella...could that also apply to cake...?!

Ah yes DD had her second round of jabs 10 days ago, and has started dribbling a bit more.
Could be anything then really, glad it sounds normal anyhoo.

Happened to both my babies who were both colicky. It's called windy baby poo. Nothing you can do. Will stop when you introduce solids. Doesn't cause any harm. I was told with my second (about 18 months ago) that the whole fore/hind milk thing was out of date. Once the milk is established it's mixed apparently.

driedapricots · 26/10/2010 21:10

mine's gone green too..and he's not feeding very well (FF) HV said it's cos he's not etting enough milk.... reassuring that it's normal at this stage for other reasons

My dd has had green poo for the last 2 weeks ever since I had gastroenteritis. Think it could be that she has had a milder dose thats taking much longer to clear up. GP said it could be lactose intolerance though so waiting for those results.
