Glycerin suppository? WWYD?:-(

Hi all,
Ds is 3 weeks and feeding really well and gaining weight. He pooed regularly for the 1st Week then went further between poos and now we are on 12 days without one:-( each health professional I see gives me a different opinion! Some say it's completely normal, others say not. The gp has now suggested if he hasn't gone by tomorrow then he could be given a glycerin suppository. I'm really not sure, this sounds so invasive:-( has anyone got any experience of their Lo's having something similar?
Sorry for the long post- TIA xxx

Are you bf? Is your DS unhappy about the no poo situation? I wouldn't feel happy about intervening if the baby is otherwise healthy, so can understand why you wouldn't.

Rhi - we were told that as DD was BF we could go between 14-16 days before we need worry as long as they had checked her over and there was no physical reason for no poo. I found she always poo'd the moment I took her for our appointment at 14ish days since the last poo. We were offered a suppository at 14 days but she poo'd everywhere moments before I did it.

If you are breastfeeding then don't worry, a long gap between poos is really normal.
All the nutrients in breastmilk are very bio-available, so your baby is able to use every scrap, and will do especially if they are having a growth spurt. It means that often there isn't a lot left to come out the other end!

I know that long gaps between poos is normal but I thought it was after the first 6 weeks.

I presume he is having lots of wet nappies?

Someone on here or www.kellymom.com might have more information

My DD had a glycerin suppository because she wasn't pooing from about 3 days old to about 14 days old. She was only given half of it and it did the job and she didn't seem to mind at all. My only advice is if he has it, you have about 60 seconds to hand DS over to DP and make yourself scarce for about 10 minutes because that will be one hell of an explosive code brown to clean up Wink

OP - no experience of this with a young baby - but my DS who is 3 years old.

On holiday recently abroad and he got a urinary infection - it was sore for him to wee so he was holding on to wees and poos (we couldn't convine him they come out of different holes) Grin.

He got onto the anti-biotics and we managed to get him to wee in the bath (less sore) but we had gone 3 days with no poo (which is a long time for a 3 year old who normally goes daily).

Doctors suggested glycerin suppository and my gut reaction was to go for it as I've seen so many tales of the issues with toddler constipation.

Anyway my DH inserted it whilst DS was asleep and then he woke up and after about 5 mins started grabbing his bottom and then we had 3 potty fulls.

If there is poo there - it will come.

Just thought my experience would help. Obviously we know why DS was holding on and you don't know why - but if there is a load there it can be hard for them to get it out.

We have had no problems since.

My DS was exactly the same from around 4 weeks old, (also bf) went for 14 days without pooing and it was obviously causing him some discomfort as he would grunt, strain and cry for hours as he tried to poo. Dr prescribed suppositories, (he said sometimes babies anal muscles are not strong enough to push the poo out.) and although it seemed a bit invasive to us it didn't seem to bother him at all. And yes, they work straight away - 10 mins later and you have a poo explosion! He was a much happier baby after that. He continued to be a infrequent pooer and we used the suppositories when he hadn't gone for a while and was unhappy and in discomfort again. He's 5 months now and seems to have grown out if it. He now poos quite happily 2 or 3 times a week.

Thankyou all for your advice and knowledge! They wanted to see him at hospital today( he's also had issues with jaundice lingering on). They started to give him the suppository but as soon as the nurse did he pooed everywhere! You were so right about how quick it is!! The poor nurse!!! Xx
