3 day old still hasn't opened bowels

3 day old DS2 hasn't had a poo yet, didn't pass any meconium at birth. Saw paed yesterday who confirmed he definately has a bum! Doesn't seem to be able to use it though.

Doc thought it was because he was slow to start feeding and all looks well otherwise so there aren't any major concerns yet but I can't help worrying a bit.

Anyone have any experience of this? Anything I can do to help him get things moving?

Thanks.

oh hairy I am so so sorry to hear the news. You will be amazed at how strong little ones can be and they really do bounce back well from surgery. It's us parents who seem to suffer more.

My DD had to have an ileostomy and stoma bag for a while to help the bowel recover from surgery. Has your DS been given one too? If so, when you are ready to face it all there is a thread either under general health or childrens health sections all about dealing with baby stomas which might help you.

I am sure you will want to be with your DS as much as you can but try and get all the rest you can as well as it can be very draining visiting a SCBU.

wishing you all the very best for a speedy recovery and please lkeep us posted on how you are all doing

Hairymelons - Try and take some time for yourself. Even just 5 minutes. And let yourself realise that you did absolutley the best thing by questioning the Paed who saw your DS initially.

Wishing him a speedy recovery xx

How are you both now?

SirBoobAlot · 24/10/2010 12:06

Blimey :( Hope he is okay and recovering well, and you are too. And hope you find the time and energy some point further down the line to complain about the doctor who said everything was fine Angry

Sending love your way. x

Glad they have found out what was wrong and he's doing well x Before long you'll be knee deep in pooey nappies and loving every second :o

Mine poo'd in the first few days, after that it was every 5 days.

The first poo is like tar, so I too would get it checked out.

They need to check for a condition called Hirschprungs disease. The bowel doesn't push matter through as quickly as it should due to some paralysis in the smooth muscle of the bowel. If not diagnosed it can mean potty training and normal bowel action is decreased.

Sorry Blush I posted before reading the whole thread so didn't realise it was diagnosed. Hope he is recovering well.

Best wishes xx

Just reading through this and wanted to add my support. My ds is now 6 but had no bowel motions and bright green vomit as a new born. He was tube fed for 10 days while they tested and prodded him and finally found a perforated bowel but no hirshsprungs. 2 weeks later his bowel became intessusepted (SP?) and trapped by some scar tissue and he had surgery to correct that. I know the roller coaster effect of the hospital where one person says all is fine and then it is all action with surgery and the works. It is physically and emotionally draining and incredibly stressful. I just wanted to say that things do get better and while we have still have some downs things for us are very much improved and I have a fully toilet trained 6 year old boy in good health which at times seemed like an unattainable dream. All the very best with your wee one and just try to take a day at a time.
