Hi,

Feeling a bit down and frustrated that my lovely baby daughter has thrush in her mouth yet again - think this is the 3rd or 4th time. I thought it had gone, no symptoms for the last 4 weeks or so, but yesterday it is back:{
Back on the treatment, nystatin liquid for her which she hates, and most comes back out again to be dribbled down her clothes, and me the cream.
I have not really ever had any symptoms, occasional discomfort, but nothing else, but her mouth looks awful, and is very noticeable in baby pictures too:(

GrrrrrrrAngryAngry

Tell me you have beaten it....!

is it definitely thrush?
only, they can just get milky residue on the tongue which isn't a problem

Summerhols · 18/10/2010 21:40

Have you tried the gel, arrrggghhh I can't remember the name! I found that nystatin did not work, so had some gel. If you look on the breast feeding network site there is a leaflet with info about what works best this has the name of the gel I am talking about.

I am sure it will go, good luck!

gardeninggirl · 18/10/2010 21:42

Yes, I think so, tho' i do know what you mean about the residue. But she's got the 'curd like' adherent patches back, especially patches on the inside surface of both lips, worse on the bottom one, which looked sore. It was those bits which made me realise it was back:( But she does have thick white patches on her tongue that could be thrush or residue I guess.
Unfortunately GP only prescribed this course of meds over the phone, did not feel he needed to see her - tbh not convinced he would have been any good as I had to remind him he needed to treat me too, he asked 'why'?!.. The good lady doc who seems more clued up about breastfeeding thrush is away on hols..

daktarin oral gel

Summerhols · 18/10/2010 21:42

see this

See the bit titled treatment for baby

Summerhols · 18/10/2010 21:43

Thanks thisisyesterday :)

Summerhols · 18/10/2010 21:44

Take this leaflet to your GP's, that is what I had to do in the end.

TheSugarPlumFairy · 18/10/2010 21:45

thoroughly recommend dactarin oral gel. Worked brilliantly for DD. Nystatin is rubbish.

when you buy it though (can get it over the counter) dont tell them it is for your LO or they will get stroppy. It is considered a chocking hazard as it is a thick gel but really it is only a danger if you put half the damn tube in her mouth.

TheSugarPlumFairy · 18/10/2010 21:46

choking even Blush

thisisyesterday · 18/10/2010 21:47

i think it should be ok as baby is 4 months

iirc they stopped usage for the gel in under 4 month old babies due to choking risk

that said, if you said she was 6 months you'd be well away Wink

also, what strenth canesten do you have for yourself? see if you can get the 2% stuff, that's available OTC too i seem to recall.

AND.... look up alternatives. i think grapefruit seed extract? and gentian violet?

gardeninggirl · 18/10/2010 21:52

Thanks Summerhols, that is really helpful, as your post has reminded me the GP mentioned a gel before.
I haven't tried it, but, on the last episode about a month ago I saw the nice lady GP who said if nystatin did not work that time she would try a gel instead. Didn't need it then or so I thought....
So, maybe I do need to ask for an actual appointment and ask for the gel instead. I am finding it much more difficult to keep any nystatin inside her mouth as she has got bigger too....By the way is the gel for her or me or both?
thanks!
Won't be able to post until tomorrow as lots of night feeds mean I have to go to bed early!

Thank you in advance for any advice, just feeling a bit pissed about it this evening. I will stop dwelling and go to bed now Thanks:)

My HV said nystatin was rubbish - I was prescribed daktarin gel for ds and it cleared his mouth in a couple of days. Make sure you treat yourself too, so you can't pass it back to her - daktarin gel isn't adequate to treat your nipples as it won't be absorbed through the skin, get canestan/clotrimazole cream. I had to treat my nipples too even though I had no symptoms.

And keep an eye out for nappy rash too! When ds's mouth cleared up he got a thrush nappy rash.

gardeninggirl · 18/10/2010 22:02

Wow! loads and loads of help while I have been typing

What a brilliant leaflet.
I am going to print it out tomorrow, thank you thank you Summerhols!
And amazing that it says what I was thinking and what the sugar plum fairy thinks too - ie nystatin is crap... I knew I could not get it to coat the inside of her lips, especially the upper palate so a gel makes much more sense. And, she is actually 4 months 1 week, and is the size of a 6 - 9 mo so I won't feel worried asking for it in the chemists.

Right now I am getting somewhere, daktarin gel, and wonderful if I can get it over the counter, as takes days to get dr appointment unless you declare an emergency which I hate..

And I am only on the 1% cream thisisyesterday so that is going to be the other part of my plan to get some more concentrated stuff for me.

Thank you so much to you all - I feel loads better now I have a plan, and a written leaflet to take to the GP too.

:):):)

Thx MoonUnit, another vote for daktarin, very useful to learn I need the canestan, but I will try to get the stronger one too. Luckily OK on nappy rash at the mo!

Thanks again ladies!
