Does teething interfere with (previously good) latch? In a 7 month old??

DS4 is now 7 1/2 months old and since the very start he has been great at latching on. I can honestly say that I have never had sore nipples feeding him.

He now has 4 fangs, has not discovered biting (yet) and is teething again. I can see the bulging gums; looks like upper canines will be next. Apart from the usual drooling/red cheeks/hands in mouth up to their hilt/unsettled days and nights, he also seems to have trouble latching on properly. He is unsettled on the breast, he nibbles on and off all night. I have started co-sleeping again, just to get any sleep at all (I am back at work). And last night he seems to have nibbled my nips to shreds Blush, without me noticing until it was too late.

Is this a common problem? My other 3 didn't seem to be thrown by teething Confused. Please somebody come on and reassure me that it is
a normal
b will pass
c there is a cure!
d And please share said cure

Yes - latch deffo changes

You do have to alter their position

Try lansinoh to help healing

It does pass as they get used to their teeth - DD inky has 2 teeth but her latch did change especially on one side

Thanks you, ruby; as usual it helps to know we are not aloneSmile.

As a 'side effect' of this altered latch I also have a sore blocked boob Sad and so far he has not been able to relieve me.

I have tried holding him in the rugby hold position again, to no avail. And for him to have his chin where the blockage is I would literally have to dangle him upside down over my shoulder...

He is now asleep with the help of Calpol and teething powders.

pacificwerewolf - the one way I got a blocked duct free was the place baby on her back on the bed and to feed her so her chin was where the block was, with me leaning over her - does that make sense! It is a bit odd (my DH said it looked like I was playing Twister). It might be a bit difficult with a 7 month old though as my DD was only 3 weeks old.

We have latch issues when new teeth come through - DS is 9.5 months and has 8 teeth.

I found that massaging the breast whilst in a hot steamy bath helped when I had a blocked duct. Using oil (any vegetable oil is fine) stops you hurting your skin.

Hope it clears soon.

Well, blockage is cleared, yeah! Thanks all Smile.

I know what you mean about looking like we were playing Twister, Summerhols Grin - that was exactly what it must have looked like.

He seemed to have been fine with the existing 4 teeth, but the new bout of teething seems to put him off.

Oh, well, I dusted the old breast pads off, put Lansiloh on the morning (have used neither since he was about 2 weeks old Hmm) and off to work I trot feeling really, really glamourous - NOT!
