Short 10min bfeeds in night and morning v sleepy - worried

My 7 wk old dd is ebf. Over the last few days she has been having expressed bottle at 11 and generally wakes between 4 and 5 for feed .. But will only go fir 10 mins before falling asleep, she then will wake around 630-7 and have about 5 mins and be really sleepy .. Maybe 10 min more at 8 and straight to sleep again.. She never really wants to wake up properly til 930-10. Is this normal? I'm worried she isn't getting enough food, I sort of thought she would be wide awake in the morning a keen for long feed.

Maybe over analysing! But would like to know if anyone experiencing similar.

Thank you!

Weird - my 7 week old does exactly the same!

Feeds at 11 and conks out, wakes again at 3.30amish, 6.30amish and 9amish. Only short feeds, but she gulps it down and goes back to sleep v quickly.

She doesn't seem starving or anything when she wakes up, and I'd thought it a bit strange, but I just assumed she was getting enough. She's gaining weight well and plus she hardly sleeps during the day and feeds all day and evening, which is v tough with a toddler!

How does yours feed during the day? Is she gaining weight?

This sounds similar to DS. We do an expressed dream feed between 10 and 11 and then he wakes anytime between 4 and 6. When he does wake he will only drink for a couple of minutes and then fall back asleep.

He's not really interested in the 7am feed either, not til after 9ish.

I try not to worry about it, I have been thinking recently its because he doesn't really need to have the night feed, but at 4 in the morning, my brain doesn't think and sticking a nipple in his mouth seems the easiest option...

As long as he's still doing wet and dirty nappies and putting on weight I wouldn't worry.

Meant to say, my DS is 13 weeks now, but has been doing this for the last 4 weeks or so...

RubyBuckleberry · 14/10/2010 21:15

i wouldn't worry at all if there is plenty of wet nappies (i'd say pooey ones too but ebf babies can do fewer poos as the breastmilk is actually ALL used). Weight is the other one - is weight ok? babies grow when they sleep - they are busy manufacturing all that milk into cells so this early on they sleep lots and lots. and it changes - my DS would have these sleeping marathons and sleep and then grow out of a load of babygros... and many many babies don't feed to two/three hour gaps, they just do what they like Grin!

also if she keeps sucking and she is asleep that is cool too. why wouldn't they fall asleep lol they feel safe, warm, full, close to you Grin its the ideal place to fall asleep haha!

Similar to my baby who seems to snack a bit in the mornings and loves a lie in! I think I also have a strong let down and she must be an efficient feeder as gaining weight and pooing and weeing fine.
I think of it as heading towards the elusive 12 hour night time!

MrsH1979 · 14/10/2010 22:11

Ah this is great stuff, thanks all for the posts. I def do have strong let down (comical spurting when she comes off! Sorry tmi!) so I guess she must just be getting what she needs. I'm glad she is not the only LO who likes a lie in as well!

Day time she tends to feed every 2-3 hrs for 20-30 mins.. Lots of wet nappies and gaining weight. So will now stop worrying ... Thinking I've been reading too many of those books which tell you what LO should be doing.. I must relax and stop being a control freak he he I knew this would be hard! :o)

Envy at feeding 20-30 mins every 2-3 hours during the day. Dd2 has been feeding practically non-stop during the day over the past couple of days. My poor neglected toddler!

I guess I have to count my blessings - the settled nights are great!

MrsH1979 · 14/10/2010 22:16

Forgot to say strawberrysam, she hates being put down upstairs to bed at 7 and is only happy in bouncy chair or on daddy downstairs til the 11 feed but she does tend to sleep there. I'm hoping that as she gets older she'll be happier sleeping upstairs in the evening on her own. It's odd as after the 11 feed she has no prob at all going down up there.

Mine did this too, also as your baby gets larger they do get much faster and more efficient at feeding,so a long feed at two weeks get shorter and shorter as the months go by.

Zimm · 14/10/2010 22:38

mine is very similar - think due to fast let down in mornings - se is 9 weeks.

MrsH1979 my DS was the same in the evening at that age. We started doing a 'bedtime' routine from 5 weeks (bath, BF in darkened nursery) but he then came back downstairs as wouldn't settle (he was quite colicky in the evenings). He would grumble then pass out on me or DH about 8.30 or 9 then I'd take him upstairs for a feed about 10.30. He always went in his cot perfectly after that feed which I found so odd! Anyway, around 10 weeks we started to keep him upstairs and settle him in the cot each time (cue a lot of running up and down stairs!) but he slowly got the hang of it and goes to bed at 7 fine now (he's 6mo). Don't worry, bedtime will get earlier as his sleep gets (a bit) more consistent.
