14 week old screaming after a feed and when farting

Hello
I have been breastfeeding my wee one fine for the past 14 weeks. She has always been quite gassy and used to really cry when needing a poo or doing one.

However, over the last few days, she has not been feeding as much, and during the day when she feeds, she will often pull off screaming. I think she is hungry, and will take expressed milk from a bottle. sometimes it seems really painful, other times ie when she just wakes up, she doesn't scream at all.

She is also screaming in pain at random times during the day - often waking up for a second to cry and going back to slee. She has been pooing every other day, but the last poo seemed quite small.

Could it be teething? she has been gnawing her fist of recently and trying to put things in her mouth. Or could she have thrush in her guts? She doesn't seem to have any visible signs of oral thrush, but I did have antibiotics recently.

Or could she have constipation? she does cry and strain a lot when poohing and farting, but I thought it was very unlikely for bf babies to get constipation?

Or could it be a growth spurt? she has been crying and sleeping a lot over the last two days, but not feeding massively more.

Finally, how would I know if she was dehydrated? or, is she just being baby and this is what they do sometimes?! It doesn't feel like nothing to me - she definitely sounds in pain.

thank you!

Hi, I think the usual signs for dehydration to look out for are dry mouth and lips, lack of wet and dirty nappies, pellet like poos, and if it gets severe the fontanelle can look sunken.

Constipation isn't usual for bf babies. The random waking and crying thing can be a little dream or just crying out when asleep, lots of babies do this. Some actually have a proper cry without waking up at all.

Could be the beginnings of teething, could be gassy. Or sometimes i think they are just less hungry than other days. If you are worried, call your HV. You could take her temperature to see if she's got a bit of a virus or anything. But if she's doing lots of wee and seems generally ok then it could just be one of those things that passes in a few days.

Also I seem to remember when my DS was about 3 months he started calling out and making some different shrieky noises, that appeared to be just because he had discovered he could. Could she be exercising her voice a bit?

But if you think it's more than this, just go to the GP to put your mind at rest. They won't mind even if it's nothing.

Hi Haggisfish

I don't have an answer, but wanted to say that my 15 week old is similar in that he is often windy and when it's trapped it's very painful. He is also feeding a lot less in the day and pulls away screaming when I try and feed him. It's quite stressful! After a feed at 10:30am he wouldn't feed again until 3:30pm, and he used to feed at least every 2 hours! He seems happier drinking expressed milk in a bottle. Feeding at night or early morning is fine though - I wonder if he's too 'busy' in the daytime now he's so much more active? I think also he finds the let-down a bit much as it sprays out in all directions!

He loves sucking his thumb/dummy these days and it seems he would rather have that than food.

Mine also does the little cry in his sleep - I reckon it's just a dream. Smile

I'm going to talk to the HV tomorrow about the feeding thing so if she has any ideas I'll let you know.

don't have any advice I'm afraid but my DD is 14 weeks on saturday and for the last 3 days has been behaving exactly the same.

ah ha! Souns identical to mine spinaltap - ditto with the fingers and thumb sucking! I am also going to see the HV tomorrow and get her weighed, so will similarly report back. she has fed quite well tonight and OH managed to settle her to sleep, so we'll see how the weekend pans out...

Regarding the letdown - when mine is like that, I express off the first ounce so that it is a bit slower and less watery for her.

it's funny how it comes and goes regarding speed of letdown. Ah, breasts, arent they marvellous!

Aren't they just! I had no idea at all what mine were capable of until I had a baby! Grin

Well the HV seems to think there's no problem. He's still gaining weight at the same rate, so he's getting enough milk - shame it's mostly at night, but never mind!

The windiness comes and goes, today he's been absolutely fine, apart from a mighty poo at lunchtime, which took us both by surprise I think!

Every week it's something new isn't it! Keeps me on my toes I suppose!

Haggisfish · 15/10/2010 17:58

same here - she's putting on weight well and Hv totally unconcerned. she's done some stinky big farts, and another poo today - there was a lot of water in it, and I panicked at the thought of diarrohea, but then realised that she had just probably done a wee straight after the poo!

I have started taking probotic and prebiotic granules in case it is thrush related, although I don't think they can pass to baby through milk.

She's been a lot more settled today - funny little things, aren't they?!
