I went to the GP's a couple of weeks ago to get some threadworm medicine for me and DC3.

He is under 2 and I am BF so we were told by pharmacist not to use the stuff you can buy from the chemists.

I explained this to the GP. He looked at DC3 and asked how old he was and seemed satisfied with the answer (DC3 is 16 months old). I then had to repeat the bit about me BF. He did a double take - couldn't see a 'baby' - and then asked me who I was BF. I pointed at my 16 month and then he got all flustered and discussed my medication options.

He seemed pretty shocked about BF a toddler and I wondered if anyone else has experienced this with a GP?

Not the same but my GP told me to put my 4 wk old (at the time) "on the bottle" as "not everyone can BF". Angry

I went in for thrush meds...

I also had a consultant tell me to stop BF at 6 months

"as there is no scientific evidence that it benefits the baby"

Hmm

Not them same either, but I recently saw a consultant with my DD due to her having allergies and was encouraged to try the special formula because "you don't want to just rely on breastfeeding". I was slightly Confused as my DD has relied on breastfeeding with no problems up until now!

harverina - yes that is the same reason I had for DC3. He has intolerance to milk and he was trying to give me the special formula.

cece, my DD has allergy to milk and egg. Have the formula in the house as I know that it would be irresponsible not to but see no reason to use it just now as we manage just fine bf'ing...I didn't even challenge the consultant which I am a bit embarassed about Blush. The consultant said "you want your DD to take a bottle to give you a break"...yes, my DD does take a bottle, but with my milk in it!

Sorry to change subject, but do you manage the intolerance ok? Its worrying me a bit at the moment as we only found out about it two weeks ago.

The GPs I saw when after thrush medication when DS was 16 months and 20 months were fine about it.
They are older and, I assume, Muslim, (which I understand advocates feeding til 2) whether that has any bearing on it.

The lady in Holland and Barrett when I asked for info on what vits are suitable for bf though was amusing.
I'm not sure why, but she asked how long I was planning to feed for. And I just pointed at 2 year old DS and she looked like Confused for a few seconds.

A positive story here - saw a new male GP, mid thirties, yesterday. He checked the meds he'd prescribed were safe for breastfeeding and asked how old my baby was. I said "one is 2 years, one is 8 months".

He looked at me conspiratorially and said "I was breastfed til I was three. I can actually remember it. It was great! Do you think you'll keep it up that long? You should, you know, it's great for them."

I walked out of the surgery smiling from ear to ear Grin

Frozen what a brilliant doctor Grin You'll be going back to see him again, then!

I had a paediatrician tell me that I needed to remember to give DS solids as well as breastmilk when I informed her I didn't know how many oz he was taking a day because he was breastfed Biscuit

Though slightly entertaining - went to the doctors a few weeks ago with a problem with my nipple. He closed the curtains on the window at the top of the wall (seriously, unless you were about eight foot high and stood on a ladder as its a hill outside, you wouldn't be able to see in) to "protect my privacy" to which I smiled and said that I'd been feeding for ten and a half months, most of Brighton had seen my boobs by now. He got very flustered Grin

frozen, that is great!

my FIL is a medical professor and says there is no benefit to bf after 3 months Sad

my MIL is a GP and firmly believes bf is not for everyone, and ff is just as good.

wastingaway · 14/10/2010 11:06

Weasle, that should sort their Christmas pressies out then. Wink

weasle · 14/10/2010 11:11
