Tips for discreet breastfeeding

I seem to have forgotten how!

Dd3 is 6 days old, feeding v easily but I still need to hold the breast due to engorgemenT. Am pretty immobile and fed up of the house so dh suggested lunch out as a way of getting me out of the house. I'm not bothered about other people seeing bits but would like not to flash whole breasts!

I used to be quite good at this but my baby brain can't remember how!

Apart from always wearing a vest under a top so you can pull vest down and top up, you could always go for a "hooter hider". At the risk of calling more attention to the fact that you are bf than if you didn't use it, it will guarantee no flashing. I actually have one that someone gave me if you would like it.

I have always used the stretchy jersey vest top under normal top route so you can go over the vest top and under the normal top thus keeping both tummy and top of breast covered.

It's the fact I'm pulling my top up so far that's the problem I think, I have a sling but not tried it yet, will see how that goes.

Don't fancy the hooter hider type stuff.

Do you just wear normal vest tops & pull down? Or breastfeeding ones?

One of those waterfall cardies is brill. Loop the drapey bit over your arm and babied head while you latch on- then once baby in position pull it away and baby's head hides your modesty.

sleepwhenidie · 13/10/2010 12:51

normal ones, H&M are good, cheap and long so cover post baby belly well Wink.

Don't blame you on the hooter hider - v nice (American) friend gave it to me and I was a bit Hmmand never used it - I did say thank you though.

Second the stretchy vest and top combo. You could also stick a scarf or pashmina round your shoulders to completely cover up if you still felt uncomfortable. I find this is good if baby is pulling on and off the latch or if I'm with male friends and relatives (it's strange I have no qualms about BF in front of male strangers but feel weird with men that I know).

nymphadora · 13/10/2010 12:59

Just trying not to show too much nipple! Don't mind showing the belly though that may put people off their dinner. Still have maternity trousers on so it's well covered for now!

Do you have any huge mens type shirts you could wear for an outing. I found that, in the first couple of days, a vest top (I liked New Look. V stretch straps) plus the flappiness of a partly open shirt did quite a good job.

susitwoshoes · 13/10/2010 13:08

M&S Supima cotton vests are nice and stretchy.

Eglu · 13/10/2010 13:11

You could try a muslin draped over your shoulder to cover the top of your breast if you are needingto pull the top up quite far.

JandT · 13/10/2010 13:15

I bought breastfeeding tops cheap on ebay which kept me going til I was less conscious and now I'm using them and normal vests under tops (does admittedly show more boob).

I thought I'd be embarrassed but he's now 3 months and has been fed just about everywhere including an A & E waiting room and church!!

MumNWLondon · 13/10/2010 14:56

the first few times you go out wear vest underneath and a big cardi on top that you can wrap round you and the baby. i wore my maternity cardigans for this.

RhinestoneCowgirl · 13/10/2010 14:59

Cardigans v handy for this time of year. And the vest thing... I know what you mean tho, thought bf would be a breeze second time round, had forgotten engorgement, floppy newborn head etc.

Enjoy your lunch :)

Stretchy vest top, under normal top. Pull top up and vest down. M&S do good ones with stretchy straps
