What does breastfeeding do to the size/condition of your breasts?

Does it make BIG-chested women get smaller?
Does it make flat-chested women get bigger?

It's all immaterial. By the time you've finished you're left with a couple of spaniels ears. Small ears if you started with small boobs and bigger ones if.....you get the picture!!

I have two dd's and prior to bf was a 32E now a 30E. Now please would someone please explain why its affected by BACK size, but not my breast size!

fqueenzebra · 10/09/2005 22:01

lost fat on your back, maybe? My aunt lost muscle in her back, actually, but not due to children some other reason it was.

I'm much happier with mine after breastfeeding dd than i was before. They used to be pancakes, and now i have a healthy cleavage, of course I notice them droop a little more, but i guess they would with extra weight anyway!

The only downside for me is i used to get away with no bra and strappy vest tops, but thats a no go nowadays!

nooka · 10/09/2005 22:18

I was small and perky (I quite liked them in fact). Now I am even smaller and droopy too. I don't like looking at them or thinking about them any more - in fact I've even vaguely thought about having surgery. However dh seems to find them attractive, so that's good.

nooka · 10/09/2005 22:19

Oh yes, and they have stretchmarks too. On the plus side I can still get away without wearing bras, which I hate.

fqueenzebra · 10/09/2005 22:25

i thought that it was pregnancy (and gaining weight as we get older) that made them droopy, not breastfeeding.....

mears · 10/09/2005 22:27

Yes, breasts change due to pregnancy and whether you breastfeed or not. When you stop feeding your boobs are empty and droopy. Takes about 2 years fr all the fat to be replaced. I am happy with mine - pretty good after 4 children I think. The fact that I am a fatty helps

Frayedknot · 10/09/2005 22:34

And it really dents your bra budget

New bras for pregnancy, new bras for BF, new bras for afterwards because your boobs are like spaniel's ears, and then maybe new bras again for when they grow back...

Why are they so expensive?!

nooka · 10/09/2005 22:34

I'm a skinny, which doesn't help. My breasts turned into beachballs when I was weaning, and I'm sure that that was part of it, as I'm well past the two year mark.

aloha · 10/09/2005 22:34

Mears! I have seen a picture of you and you are so NOT a fatty!

mears · 10/09/2005 22:35

That picture was 5 years ago Aloha

snafsicle · 10/09/2005 22:37

Mine have totally disappeared - and they weren't exactly eye-popping to start with. It would almost be worth getting pregnant again just to get 'em back for a while...

Miaou · 10/09/2005 22:38

I was just thinking this morning, I LOVE breastfeeding...and why? Because I go up to a 36B (from an A cup)

Sadly go back to A cup once I give up. I suppose I should be happy that I go back to my original shape and not spaniel-eared but, bah humbug, wish I could stay a B cup

beckybrastraps · 10/09/2005 22:38

Hmm - I was big-chested (F cup), became enormous whilst feeding (H+), 8 months after stopping feeds have settled down to G. As Nik72 said though - it's the shape more than the size. Still, if you buy a good bra you can stuff them in and hoick them up, and they still look pretty good. Can't understand why women with big breasts don't go for good bras. It pains me to see women walking down the street with breasts down to their navels. I'm with Trinny and Susannah on this one!

Flossam · 10/09/2005 22:41

I'm currently wearing 36D when I was a 34B. Although really I think I'm a 36C. All in all not too bad, but they don't stand up so well and are covered in stretch marks and I don't get as good a cleavage because they're all soft and floppy!

mancmum · 10/09/2005 22:50

I started off as 34 DD and finished as a 34D - they are still where they started off and don;t look to bad... I did a lot of swimming when I stoped bfing and think that helped a lot...

bobbybob · 11/09/2005 04:24

I had a big chest. it got bigger in first few weeks. Then I had a year of pitta bread boobs.

4 weeks since stopped and they are back to exactly the same size as before already.

Wonderful things breasts.

SleepySuzy · 11/09/2005 07:24

Mine were big and saggy before. They are still big and saggy!

SueW · 11/09/2005 07:35

I agree good bras are essential. It makes SUCH a difference to the way you look and how your clothes fit.

I hated crossover tops until I got properly fitted. Now everything's back in the right place

beetle73 · 11/09/2005 07:56

I stopped bf 7 months ago and have lost a cup size. More importantly, they don't have the same 'density' as before. I wore a bra religiously throughout pg and bf, even at night. Really comforted by Mears saying that this may come back over time.

fqueenzebra · 11/09/2005 21:12

I didn't know T+S said that, Beckybrastraps, but it's so true! It really pains me to see women with boobs down below their elbows. Not natural.

Mine (very average sort of size) seem slightly smaller than they were before 3 children, so I am also cheered by Mears' comments.

motherinferior · 11/09/2005 21:17

I think my left breast (the more copious one) may have gone down a cup size from its pre-children size, but overall I seem to be still a 34DD.

They aren't quite what they used to be, but are still really quite well-positioned for a person of 42. And it may well be that I am now five years (and a crucial five years they are too) older since first getting up the duff.

Yep, hoick'em up, that's the way to go.

welshmum · 11/09/2005 21:25

I recommend a visit to Rigby and Peller (get dhs to provide a voucher) Mine look much better in their bras. I'm like you Wills - went from 36C to 34E - don't think they've been too badly affected all in so far - but haven't finished bfing no.2 so all might yet go tits up (or down....)

SueW · 12/09/2005 06:57

T&S say that you should spend big money on properly fitting undergarments. Great pics of S in normal knicks with v saggy tum hanging over and contrast pic of her in magic knickers.

I gulped at spending £30+ on a bra but it's done wonders. So much so I've bought five new bras this summer at similar price AND considered cup-sized swimwear. That gives you a total radical figure change - but IMO the Fantastie stuff isn't great cos the material's just a bit on the thin side and would def go see-through in the pool. You know you're in trouble when you try on a swimsuit and you can see your belly button through it.
