does he need an iron supplement?
HV told my cousin that as she hasn't weaned him completely he will need an iron supplement. Is this true?

you can try here for some information.

I think it's a personal decision tbh. I don't think the majority of babies need extra iron.

All I can say is that we don't, but hopefully someone more knowledgeable will come along to give you the relevant facts to better make a decision.

not necessarily, my DD didn't really eat anything substantial until she was over 8 months and we didn't give her supplements, it's a precautionary measure which they recommend but isn't necessary for most babies, things like whether the cord was left to finish pulsating before it was cut at birth are supposed to have an effect, you can have the baby's ion levels checked at the gp's if you're concerned.

no they don't need more iron. some studies show that the iron stores start to reduce at 6 months but they don't need a supplement. some children are ex bf for much longer than 6 months quite happily.

If he was a full term healthy baby then there is no need for an iron supplement.

You will find you HV recomends vitamin suppliments but this is for Vit D and they don't contain iron. The choice is your's at to wearther to give them though.

Your choice, but my nephew who was BF until 15 months (full term healthy baby)(ate hardly anything but BM until 12 months) broke his leg around then.... SIL thought it wierd as they didn't remember him falling. Turned out it broke easily as he was vit D deficient and also he was anaemic.

I agree with previous poster to have iron levels checked out esp if baby not eating iron rich food.
