Does thrush inevitably cause breast problems and nappy rash?

Just wondering if the white patchy stuff on the tongue is significant in the absence of other related problems. It doesn't come off like milk would.

That definitely sounds like thrush.
When DS had it in his mouth, I had no symptoms at all.

You both need to be treated though.

I printed off a copy of the Breastfeeding Network's leaflet on thrush to take to the GPs when the first one I saw only prescribed for DS.
You can download it here.

Aha. It's been there for a while, and it's like a fairly thick white layer on the back part of the tongue. Her bum's fine though Confused but maybe I should get the GP or HV to have a peek. Thanks for the link :)

No DS had no bum problems with it either.

Think you'll need GP as HV can't prescribe for you? Confused

Happy to help. Smile

Can I ask what prompted you to get it treated?

It was bothering him and he was sort of chewing it so it bled. He was off his food and generally unhappy.
He had it at 17months and 20 months, so it was really obvious that it was bothering him.

Another thing I did that may have helped was to take a pro-biotic supplement for a couple months.

Ah. Not sure whether to bother with it. I was going through some issues with a BFC who suggested her windy guts could be thrush related but other than her mouth she's fine so I'm not sure whether it needs to be treated. Part of me thinks it's worth a try (also don't want it to get worse) but then I'm not convinced it's significant and there are numerous other things which may be more likely causes, being a newborn amongst them!

Thanks :)

Hi, my DD had a few tiny white spots in her mouth at 9 days old. I had her treated but the doc I saw said it was only mild so I didn't need treating.

By 3 weeks old, DD had thrush on her bum and I had it really bad in my nipples. It was so painful I nearly stopped breastfeeding.

I would say get her treated and if you're breastfeeding, get yourself treated too as it really is painful. I rally wouldn't take the chance.

My ds had it in his mouth - whole mouth was covered in white patches within a few days, but as he was only a week or so old it was difficult to tell if it bothered him or not. He was prescribed daktarin gel and it cleared up in about 3 days.

But, once it was gone from his mouth it flared up on his bum. We got daktarin cream for his bum, and also had to treat his mouth with daktarin gel and my nipples (although I had no symptoms)with canestan cream at the same time. Took weeks and still couldn't get rid of the nappy rash :( Eventually we were prescribed Canestan HC cream and that seems to have done it. DS is now 9 weeks old though.

Hmm. This coating has been in her mouth for over a week - I mentioned it to the HV a week ago - she didn't look but said a milky coating is normal and just to keep an eye on it as she has no other symptoms. I'm sure it isn't milk because it's there all the time, not just after a feed, and it doesn't wipe off with a finger. It does sound like although it hasn't come to anything yet it definitely could cause trouble so I'll see the GP next week. Thanks :)
