Lop sided! BF baby refusing one side.

I posted on this a few weeks ago and was advised that supply would settle down and my boobs would even up. No chance! DS is regularly refusing to feed from my right breast and really kicks off if I try to put him on that.

Suprisingly it is the left side that is regularly the largest and fullest. Given that it is the right that is fed from more, would have thought it the other way round!

I think I know why this problem has arisen. I haven't always had the greatest latch on this side, also seem to have a very rapid letdown here. Consequence is it is larger and I am often engorged so he can't latch on as easily which I suppose puts him off.

I have tried to express a bit before feeding which helps a little. Also if I get him when he's sleepy he will feed from it.

I don't mind the faffing around so much but am fed up with 2 very different sized norks! Anyone else experienced this?

I will pesist with the right hand boob and get him to feed from this as often as poss but any other hints. I would have thought it would get smaller as he is feeding less from this side - just don't understand.

Thanks for any advice.

BTW - have tried football hold but he is too big for that now and lying down doesn't help.

I thought he might be in some kind of pain but tbh he will lie on that side easily if on the floor so don't think he's sore.

This will probably not help you but my first DS was also almost refusing to drink from one side which was very uncomfortable and worrying at the time. I actually think the milk came out too quickly for him from one side (similar to what you said) but eventually milk supply adjusted to his demand and it was ok. You obviously know what you're doing but if you express the milk supply will not go down. If he is putting on weight ok I would just hang on in there until the milk supply adjusts to the demand. But I remember well how uncomfortable it gets ...

I had this to start with- MW tried for half an hour to latch him on my left and failed completely! So I had the same problems with odd-sized norks too, so I sympathise. Nipple shields seemed to help reconcile DS to my left boob and he soon became just as happy with it as with the right one.

Hope you manage to sort it- and utmost respect to you, a few weeks is an awfully long time to struggle on with this. Have you looked into getting a BF counsellor round to help, or spoken to the La Leche League?

Thanks to both for replies and glad it worked out for you both - gives me hope!

I did see a BF counsellor round early on regarding latch issues and she sorted out a few problems. I will go back and see her I think.

He has just fed from the dodgy side tonight. Am starting to think that it is a mixture of him finding it difficult to latch when I am so engorged as well as oversupply and fast letdown.

Just have to plod on with it I suppose! Just hope the breast situation rights itself eventually!
