As part of the peer supporter training, we've been asked to read some books which are helpful with encouraging breastfeeding, and some not so.

I have a few written down, but any suggestions appreciated :)

The food of love: the formula for successful breastfeeding by Kate Evans is mega helpful. Gina ford isn't.

Sal I read that today - its fab! Really enjoyed it, and flicked through the Mama Sutra pages going "Done that one, done that one, done that one..." Grin

Yes, good old Gina is one the suggested reading list... Not sure if I can force myself through a whole book of her waffle....

Politics of breastfeeding! NHS stuff I also found was very good in a practical way. I also read a book by Penelope Leach my aunt had leant me from the 70s and apart from recommending weaning at 4 months I found that very good.

The EASY book (baby whisperer??) I found wasn't.

Ina May's guide to breastfeeding - practical advice plus history/social aspects.
How are you feeling now sirboobalot? Did you get a diagnosis?

Food of Love was brilliant- shame I hadn't come across it until after DS3 was born.

Do websites count? If so, Kellymom has to be up there.

Agree with you about BW and GF books- written by women who have more interest in making money than helping women breastfeed.

Not sure about the CBC book as I haven't read it, but if her comments in the national press are anything to go by, it's gonna be pretty poor.

The Womanly Art of Breastfeeding is meant to be good, I'll let you know when I've started reading it Grin Lactivist.net has some interesting articles too if you are also looking for websites.

The Clare Byam-Cook Book is bloody awful IMO. "How to Breastfeed ...and what to do if you Can't" (because you thought you had no milk due to my shitty book telling you to check by expressing.)

My MIL borrowed it for me (without my asking) when DS was a few weeks old. It arrived with the page on demand feeding folded down (allegedly by the book's owner), my MIL was always freaked out by how often DS fed Angry Not sure if she even knows he is still feeding a bit at 1 year old, easier not to mention it.

Really glad I had already heard how unhelpful the book was from a few sources.

Politics of breastfeeding was very interesting, might have to read it again cos I flew through it the first time!

Nearly all books about new babies (The rough guides to babies/babies and toddlers for example) somehow manage to be positive and negative about BF at the same time in their feeding sections. I think they are trying to be realistic and also not make people feel bad for using formula, it just all comes across a bit confused.

I love the Ultimate Breastfeeding Book of Answers by Dr Jack Newman - the man is a breastfeeding god.

Also Breastfeeding Your Baby by Karen Pryor - is possibly a bit dated and may be out of print, but is very positive and a bit of a blast from the 1970s... you do have to ignore such statements as 'feed your baby in the car on the way to the party' and remember that those cars probably didn't have child restraints that would be acceptable today... :)

Politics of Breastfeeding should be read by everyone, everywhere, man, woman or child!
