I had mastitis when ds was about a week old and have had it with previous bf dc. Today my left breast has been feeling a bit sore and in the last hour or so I've been aching and generally not feeling 100%. I know it is common when baby is little but how common is it with established bf? Or maybe I'm just coming down with something else :(

I first got it when dd1 was about 9 months old. Got it again when dd3 was over 6 months. I never got it with a little baby.

Hope you're feeling better soon whatever it is :)

I got it with my 17m old! I think if you are a bit run down anyway then you are more susceptible to it . Poor you. REST and get to the GPs as soon as you can for some meds.

I had it when DS was 4 months and again at 5 months.

I found that taking my bra off completely for all feeds was very beneficial, in addition to all the keep feeding, hot flannels etc.

Thanks for your quick replies. I have started him on fruit etc and so wondered if it was because he wasn't feeding as much from me. He still feeds a lot though and through the night so I'm not sure.

Did you get antibiotics on each occasion or just deal with it yourself?

I went to the Drs as I felt so terrible! But up to you.

I hope you feel better soon x

Once I started with the fluey and unwell feelings then antibiotics were the only way.

Several other times I had just a blocked duct, which was excruciatingly painful but I was able to self-treat.
