I took some ebm out of the fridge today - it had been there about 20 hours. it had separated so I shook it before feeding to ds. However, i noticed grainy residue on the bottle after he had finished. Now I'm wondering if it was off...

Anyone know?

It should be ok. I always have to shake bottle really thoroughly cos it separates loads & sometimes it still has a residue on the bottle.

My HV told me ebm can stay in fridge for over 24 hours - might even have been a week - apparently recent studies have found anti-bacterial agents in bm!

should be fine! it can stay out at room temp for 8-11 hours... and well over 24 in fridge

I've just finished a breastfeeding peer support course and the information we were given there was that breastmilk can be left at room temp for up to 6 hours, or stored in the back of the fridge (not the door) for up to 48 hours.
Breastmilk does seperate and it doesn't mean its off, just shake it thoroughly like you said.

I think newest advice from lalecheleague is that it will last for 8 days in the fridge but personally I try to use it within 48 hours or freeze it if it won't be used. Also check the temperature of your fridge, the little dial at the top should be at 4 or 5.
