She hs been formula fed :( since Tuesday. She has had a tiny amount of posseting since then but since 3pm today she has been bringing up alot of milk after each feed.

I am waiting on NHS calling me back but wondered if you had nay advice in the meantime as i am panicking!

Sometimes it is pure milk, sometimes it is mucussy.

Does she have a cold? is she ok? not limp unrousable?

Could be an allergy to the milk?

No words of wisdom hopefully someone will have some soon, hope shes okx

organiccarrotcake · 01/10/2010 21:21

Could be reflux - usually kicks in about now. DS2 has it and is dairy intolerant. I BF but have to have no dairy in my diet or my DS is really sick. Is there any chance of going back to BM as I assume the :( means you'd prefer to BF? If she's dairy intolerant you'll need specialist formula.

Is she otherwise well? Any temperature at all?

TheUnmentioned · 01/10/2010 22:12

no temp i dont think.

a little congested but has been since birth.

been v v alert

went onto ff as she has bad tongue tie, im exhausted and she was badly jaundiced. ive been doing one feed a day but she is already struggling with latching on.

thanks for replies. excuse no capitals one handed typing.

Is the TT cut now?

Congested? Hmm, I would definately take her to a cranial osteopath. Get them to check her sinuses and also the nerve to her stomach - that may help a lot.

If she's swallowing a lot of mucus that will make her sick - and if that's what she's bringing up that's probable.

If she's no temp and is otherwise well, don't panic. Keep on here and keep us updated.

thecaptaincrocfamily · 02/10/2010 00:02

Can I ask what sort of birth/delivery you had?

thecaptaincrocfamily · 02/10/2010 00:04

Congestion is really common after a C-section. Often they seem to bring up lots of milk but in reality it usually isn't that much. How much milk is baby taking per feed?

WillYouDoTheDamnFanjo · 02/10/2010 00:11

Good bit of advice I had to get an idea of how much a baby is actually bringing up - get a tablespoon of milk, and throw it onto a table/muslin. 15ml looks like a hell of a lot more when it's spilled!

TheUnmentioned · 02/10/2010 10:46

It was a natural birth. She was born all snotty tbh.

OP posts:
organiccarrotcake · 02/10/2010 19:52

What does your MW say about the snottiness? What did NHS direct come up with?

cleo78 · 02/10/2010 20:10

My DS started doing exactly the same after we had to switch to him being ff. My advice (these really worked for us...)
-sit her up after feeds
-buy plenty of muslins and make sure she is really well burped after feeds (although don't push it!!)

  • cut down the volume of each feed and add an extra in if necessary.
-we tried Dentinox, infacol etc and they seemed to work for a short period and then stopped.
  • raise the mattress head a wee bit if she's going straight to sleep after a feed (we used to put a rolled up hand towl under the mattress of the moses basket.
  • reassure yourself that she is not throwing up the whole bottle by spilling various volumes of milk to know what it looks like!

We never got the situation diagnosed as such, even though it got pretty bad at times (he was known as vomboy!!). But if this does continue for you, be reassured that it will get better! DS had a little spit up on my shoulder today (after eating his solids!!!) and I got a total shock!!

Oh, also, if it does continue, don't be tempted to rush to solids too soon- in my experience, it doesn't solve the problem and you simply end up with more sick everywhere!!!!

cleo78 · 02/10/2010 20:13

sorry...got totally carried away above! It may just be a one off afterall!

biglips · 02/10/2010 20:16

i used to wind my dd2 every 2oz she had as she was a very windy baby till she was a few months old as if she drank a 4oz all in one go, she would threw it all back up. I never had this problem with my dd1.

cleo78 · 02/10/2010 20:34

actually, biglips has reminded me that we did find that by winding DS about 3 or 4 times a feed, it really helped. Although, I never seemed to time it right, and he just got himself even more wound up for me when he thought I was taking the milk away! But it did work for everyone else who fed him!

TheUnmentioned · 02/10/2010 20:54

nhs direct said to keep eye.

midwife not fussed about congestion!

she has-touch wood- been better today, as you can probably tell by my typing though she is not settling and lives on my shoulder!!

OP posts:
thecaptaincrocfamily · 02/10/2010 21:24

Aww, hope LO settles for you soon. Good advice from cleo btw. I would say the same.

TheUnmentioned · 02/10/2010 22:42

Well she's just puked loads of stuff up, I knew she was going to because she was crying a bit beforehand and pulling her legs up.

It was either mucussy or half digested I cant decide which, thick anyways. Is this a sign of reflux? What should I do in the long term?

She is crying wanting fed again now. I struggle with knowing what to do in this situation. I dont want to overfeed her and make her more sick!

She had 4oz at 6 and 4oz between 9 and 10 and a breastfeed at 730 so she's had loads.....

Argh!

PS thanks for replies.

thecaptaincrocfamily · 02/10/2010 22:57

No it sounds like she just has lots of mucus which she has been swallowing. Babies don't cough phlegm up well and consequently swallow it. When it mixes with milk thats what happens. So long as she is keeping most feeds in don't worry. Awful having to clean it up but not detrimental to her. If she vomits more than 3 feeds in a row go to the doc. Smile

thecaptaincrocfamily · 02/10/2010 22:59

PS if she is hungry then feed her a small amount and wait 20 mins, feed again if ok and still hungry with lots of winding in the middle.

TheUnmentioned · 02/10/2010 23:01

thanks
