does anyone else have a 'starving 6 month old'? We have started weaning but she doesn't manage to actually swallow that much food. She seems to want boob more and more and more... barely lasting 2 hours in between and generally being clinging and fussy.

hubby is insisting I need to add formula, thats she is not satisfied with breast and to give me a break as i am honestly exhausted going back to the newborn feeding pattern of every 1-2 hours...

anyone else want to moan, share experiences or tell me how to get her eat more food, ,less milk...or how to tell my husband formula is not the answer

My DS2 did something similar to this at this age and was feeding every 2 hours most nights for a few weeks. I think it was a combination of teeth and growth spurts and general developmental stuff. He learned to crawl at the same time as this was going on. He is exc BF and we are BLW so I don't think he ate much at all for the first 6 weeks or so of weaning. In any case I am not sure solids make that much difference to sleep. I have never used formula so I can't comment on that score.
You could try expressing for your DH to feed at night ?
You could try napping when the baby sleeps in the day.
In my opinion its just a phase some babies go through when they are teething, learning something new. It won't go on forever.
Good luck and hang in there.

Sounds like the 6 month growth spurt.

Don't forget that milk should be the main source of nutrition for the first year and she won't initially take much solid food.

Sounds like your breast milk is fine- can you find ways to cope with the constant feeding while she is upping your supply?

Stick with it if you can- it won't last forever. Smile

What type of food are you giving her? Have you tried baby rice made up with expressed breast milk or formula? It's a good first food as its basically thickened milk!

My dd is exactly the same, feeding ALL the bleeding time and every two hours at night. She is also 6 months, I have been getting towards the end of my tether and did try her with some formula today more with a view to dropping a feed as going back to work soonish but she threw it straight back up! She also isn't that interested in solid food. I have recently spoken to two other mums with babes the same age (and breastfed) and they are doing exactly the same but both of them are eating more solids than mine. Dare I suggest that this is a growth spurt?! And it will pass?! I personally don't reckon formula will make much difference but I share your pain!

thanks for the support, feels good not to be the only one..

I originally thought growth spurt, but it has been 1 week now!?/! previous growth spurts lasted 2 days...

have only been giving her fruit and veg, will try the baby cereal, thanks

there's not many calories or nutritional value to baby rice missyt. I'd stick with the fruit and veg- at least it's got some vitamins in it.

MollysChambers · 29/09/2010 09:02

Baby rice is carbohydrate. Of course it has nutritional value. The baby is still getting all its vitamins from breast milk at six months. Baby rice is a good first food and if you've been drinking nothing but milk for 6 months then it's a step forward.

Could she be teething and feeding more often for comfort/pain relief? Any signs of teeth yet?
