is it possible for my milk to be 'off'?

long story short, ds is 3 months and super hungry, has 2 bf's a day and the rest ff (if i was ebf i would literally have a baby on my boob all day!). lately ive had a very persisant and sore thrush in left boob so have been expressing as its much less painful than him feeding directly, and when he then has my milk from the bottle he seems to grimace at it and it takes a while for him to be coaxed into drinking it all. i have tasted to see if its alright and it definitely is less sweet than formula, but doesnt taste sour or bad - is it possible for thrush to alter the taste? or worse, does it affect the milk so its not drinkable?? anyone know??

I don't think it should affect your milk. Are you getting proper treatment for the thrush?

yeah we've got all the stuff - daktarin for me and nystatin for his mouth. my HV wasn't even sure it was thrush but thought we should chuck that stuff on anyway to see what would happen. turns out, it was thrush, just an unusual case.
so you don't think my milk tastes foul to him?

Did it taste soapy at all? A few women (me included) have a lot of lipase in their milk which breaks down fats. Have a read of this..www.kellymom.com/bf/pumping/lipase-expressedmilk.html

If it is this, you could get around it by feeding immediately after you have expressed (not sure if that is what you are doing anyway though).

He's probably just thinking "weird, this tastes like mummy's milk but appears to be coming from a rubbery teat and not my mummy's nice soft boobies".

FYI nystatin is crap, try the daktarin ORAL gel for his mouth.

Daktarin oral gel is only for babies aged over 4 months

organiccarrotcake · 26/09/2010 11:02

No it's ok, it's only licensed for that but it's ok to use it carefully (it's because there's a chocking risk as it's very thick. so small smears should be used - takes about 5 smears to cover the whole mouth).

You need fluconazole for yourself if you're getting breast pain - it's oral - not the vaginal thrush dose but a loading dose then a course over a week or so.

read this and show your HV

Nystatin is not very good either - daktarin gel is much more effective.

somethings can change the taste of your milk - I had bad mastitis and DS went off feeding on that side, doc said it could have been the infection changing the taste

Yes I have heard that if you have a blockage it can sometimes make the milk taste slightly salty to encourage them to feed on that side. Don't know how true this is.
