Help - over surply at 13 weeks

Hi

Has anyone got any advice about having too much milk? My DD is 13 weeks and is EBF, she feeds about every 2 hours during the day but only once in the night.

I am having real problems with too much milk, in the mornings my boobs are rock hard and my DD ends up coughing and drowning as it is spurting out. When she comes of it is like a fountain (sorry TMI!). This morning she found it really hard to feed and ended up hysterical, so I hand expressed to slow the flow down and then fed her.

It had settled down in the night a few weeks ago but seems to have gone back to them getting really full again. It happens also during the day if she goes longer than 2 hours.

My DH says I should express and freeze it for a later date (???) but I am worried this will just make things worse as my boobs will up suply.

Has anyone got tips or had simular experience? My sofa is seriously suffering as it has milk squirted all over it on a daily basis!

Are you anywhere near a milk bank - try googling it - but they accept donations of surplus breast milk.

If you are comfortable expressing then yes, I agree with CupcakesHay - look into donating your excess milk :) otherwise just keep on doing what you're doing, it'll settle down eventually.

Hello,
I had an oversupply problem too - I found that it was much worse when I expressed! It is very hard to deal with plus DS was getting all the ill effects & very windy, green poo, tummy pains from too much foremilk, upset from trying to deal with the fast let down!
In the end I did block feeding (google it, it is when you feed off the same boob for a few feeds) and that sorted things out within about 48 hrs. I had to spend the first 24 hrs feeding DS off the same boob for about 6 hrs! I expressed a tiny bit off the other boob just for comfort.
It really worked for us. Good luck!

Yes, block feeding is probably the solution. Although I would love to suggest donating milk I would agree that expressing will make it worse. You need to reduce your supply, not increase it.

You may find that when you get into block feeding and reduce the supply you could consider milk donation because you make plenty of milk so it's easy. For me, I've had to increase my supply to be able to donate which was a much easier thing to do.

It won't help the oversupply issue, but might help your baby to feed more easily if you feed her in a reclined position. That way the flow of milk isn't being helped by gravity, and she should be able to control the amount she's swallowing more easily. My friend had this problem with her ds, and apparently feeding this way worked a treat!
