God, am having a horrific time. Haven't slept in 24 hours. Baby screaming unless at the breast, but can't seem to stay latch on.

Tried laying down but kept delatching and getting hysterical. Tried biological nurturing position, normal cross cradle position. Some latches good, some bad. Nipples taking a bashing. Neither of us slept really. What can I do| I'm a small bout of delirium away from sending DH for formula and/or dummy which I really don't want to do.

Please help (this is DD2 btw)

This sounds very familiar! In our case, he got 15ml formula by syringe which transformed things. He was calmer and had energy to latch on and suckle well.

BF has been a bit of a challenge with tongue tie but is now going so well I was just googling breast milk donation.

Thanks for all the messages. Slept a couple of hours. Dd home and in laws here. Just good to know thus is normal.

Congratulations on your DD :)

Try feeding in the bath.

CharlieCorisepa · 22/09/2010 19:03

I had the same problem and the best advice I had in the end was to use nipple shields which loads of people advise against but were a godsend. I used it on both sides for 8 weeks in total when DD suddenly latched on by herself one day in a cafe and we have never looked back. I was so determined to breastfeed that I would have been gutted if I had continued to have such problems and had to turn to formula, am now a huge fan of people using shields when they need to!

How are you getting on, Bumper?

theboobmeister · 22/09/2010 22:25

Tongue tie?? Could you take a look in her mouth to see?

Bumperlicious · 22/09/2010 22:52

Thanks all. Doing better. She has slept but only on me so far which isn't really conducive to me sleeping. But dh on sofa sleeping & going to take her off later if poss.

No Tongue tie. Going to persevere with the bio nurturing if poss.

There is a bf group tomorrow across the road so going to try & make it out.

I hope you had a better night.

Bumperlicious · 23/09/2010 09:09

We are just about getting feeding cracked but she won't sleep unless on me, won't really settle at all, even for dh. I know she needs to be close but I need to sleep & can't relax with her on me all the time, getting v uncomfy.

Help! How can I get her to settle in the basket so I can eat/sleep? Only managing to post on here for support with my iPhone.

Bumperlicious - its your smell that she likes, its lovely and comforting. So, wrap her up in a worn top of yours (whatever you were wearing last night/yesterday/earlier in the day) so she's loosely swaddled and give her to DH to hold while you shower and eat. If she cries he can jiggle her and walk around. DS1 was really very like this - and it calmed down over time. It'll be fine.

FoghornLeghorn · 23/09/2010 10:26

Only just seen this bumper, sorry your first night was so awful :(

Dinkys idea is good - she's probably just familiarised with your scent and finds it comforting.

Hope things are settling down a bit more now

sarahbuff · 23/09/2010 13:28

Do you have a sling Bumper? (Big congrats btw!! Loved following the live birth thread, well done you!) If she'll settle inside a sling, maybe you can get something to eat, or even have a little snooze on the sofa? I remember my DS1 refused to settle at night for the first 3 or 4 days unless he was laying on top of me, and as you say, doesn't let you sleep any! If she's kutched up against you in a sling, maybe you can sneak a few naps here and there during the day...

rubyslippers · 23/09/2010 13:32

This sounds like my dd ... She was on me for the first 72 hours until my milk came in
She and i didn't sleep at all.
Rugby ball hold was brilliant at helping her latch

porcamiseria · 23/09/2010 17:27

hi, we had same its a mare with colustrum till milk comes in. try dripping formula onto nipples. this was they get food, suck nipple and boost supply

good luck xx

Bumperlicious · 24/09/2010 15:05

i do have a sling, a close baby carrier, it's just finding the wherewithall to figure out how to use it! i think there is a dvd but i should have figured it out before she came. will dig it out later when dh wakes up.

Hope things are getting a bit easier for you now... Has your milk come in yet?

sarahbuff · 25/09/2010 18:02

here's a video on YouTube... Might be quicker than digging out the dvd!
