Young baby sleeping too much - x post

is my thread on sleep www.mumsnet.com/Talk/sleep/1043686-Young-baby-sleeping-too-much

Looking for reminders of the sleeping/feeding patterns of a young baby. My new baby seems to sleep a lot and feed a lot less than my other children. Should I worry or just relax.

What's the nappy output like - plenty of poos and pees? If they're good, enjoy it while it lasts Wink

Babieseverywhere · 18/09/2010 10:42

She is weeing for britain but only pooing every 3/4 days, midwife wasn't concerned though.

A one-month old BF baby should be poo-ing at least once a day, so I would be concerned at that even if the MW isn't. Worth getting her weighed again asap?

It may well be that she is falling asleep before she gets to the richer milk - this can happen with sleepy babies, they don't necessarily wake to feed when they need to. Also, you mentioned jaundice in your last post - is that all cleared up now? Personally I would want to get this checked too, if only to exclude the possibility of some underlying cause for her sleepiness.

Some helpful info here on sleepy babies

Hmm, has she always been pooing every 3/4 days? Or is that just a recent thing?

I would be a bit concerned, tbh. But you say on your other thread that she's starting to smile at you. Is she sleeping more or less over time? Does she have some alert periods in the day?

Did your breastfeed your other two? If you did, your supply is likely to be better, and your new baby could be a very efficient pooer ...

The rare poos do have me worried, though, tbh.

Babieseverywhere · 18/09/2010 13:50

She has always only pooed every few days.

I am still nursing my other two children (2 and 4 years old) so loads of milk and I am an old hat at the actual breastfeeding bit.

DD2 last blood result said that the antibodies have cleared and she needs no further treatment or appointments...though they then sent us a follow up appointment for next month Hmm.

Her colour looks good, so I don't think she is jaundice atm.

Babieseverywhere, do you think it's worth calling the paediatrician for a chat to see what they think? If they have booked you a follow-up appointment, they must think it's still worth monitoring your DD. I think they are better placed to judge ...

Babieseverywhere · 18/09/2010 20:01

Good idea. I was going to ring them Monday just to check why they needed to see DD2 again in October. I'll run the sleeping/pooing thing past them as suggested.

I'm going to make sure I get to clinic this week and get her weighed as well. If she has put on a reasonable weight gain that will make me feel better too.

Mine used to poo once a week (massive and messy). HV told me this was not unusual in a bf baby.

heymango · 18/09/2010 20:35

I would check out the pooing thing, but in the Birth to Five (?) book I remember reading that BF babies can go anything from 8 times a day (mine!) to once a week (yours!). Hopefully nothing to worry about.

jemjabella · 19/09/2010 09:53

BF babies can go up to 2 weeks but this doesn't normally start until around 6 weeks.

MrsGangly · 19/09/2010 20:47

Until he was 5 weeks old, my BF DD wouldn't poo for 2-3-4 days but when he did, it was massive!

my HV visitor told me that bf babies can go 11 days without pooing. Mine poos every 2-4 days, big massive ones that go EVERYWHERE!

Babieseverywhere · 21/09/2010 21:07

I got DD2 weighed today and she has now 10 lbs 13ozs up from her 9lbs 6ozs birth weight. She is 'catching down' in her growth dropping from the 95 centile to 75, which is fine (her sister dropped from from 95 to 50 !)

So I am happy to let her sleep as long as she likes :)
