Antibiotics and wind in BF baby?

Hi there
I had a complicated delivery and since my 6 week old son was born I have had IV antibiotics and then two rounds of oral antibiotics (augmentin). I now have mastitis (sigh...) and am on flucloxicillin. I have noticed that each time I go onto the antibiotics my little one gets horrendous wind. He is not really a windy baby but the awful screaming wind pain definitely co-incides with me being on antibiotics. Has anyone else had a similar experience? I keep being told that antibiotics can't go through the milk to the baby but this pattern is too much to ignore - he is so much better within 12 hours of me finishing the antibiotics. Has anyone found anything that helps with this problem? I have started him on Biogaia infant probiotic but not sure it is helping - does gripe water help much? I hate seeing him in such pain when he is normally such a happy baby, eating and sleeping so well.
Thank you :)

Hi,

I had antibiotics after DD1. She was very windy. Community midwife recommended I stop taking them to see if that helped (was feeling fine anyway). Make of that what you will.

As it turned out DD1 was just a windy baby though it did sort itself out after about six weeks.

I used Infacol before feeds which seemed to help her bring up the wind. Not sure about Gripe water. I do know that it used to have alcohol in it Hmm and obviously doesn't now. Don't know how that has affected its effectiveness!

I was on 5 different antibiotics after my CS as I got an infection and they definitely affected my DD2. She was miserable with wind. It would take her ages to settle after a feed, especially at night when I was desperate to put her in her basket and get some sleep myself. She was happiest upright against my chest which doesn't let you get much done in the day time and isn't good for resting at night either.
I tried infacol and gripe water. Both help to some degree IME but the thing that made the biggest difference was coming off the antibiotics. I completed all of the courses (some were double and they were even worse for DD). I don't recommend you stop taking the antibiotics although it's not good having a windy baby you need to get sorted yourself.
Some sort of wrap sling would have probably helped but I didn't try it at the time as that would have kept her in the position she wanted to be in but let me move around a bit. I have a lovely photo of my Mum knitting with DD2 on lying on her chest - she was just so happy to be upright!
Oh and my gripe water tip is to use an empty Infacol bottle and dropper as it is much easier to administer that way rather than with a teaspoon.
Slingjax let you hire a sling so you could see if that helps or borrow one from a friend to try one out.

DS didn't get wind, but did have green poo for nearly two weeks after I was on a course of antibiotics. The HV/ peadiatrician both seemed to think it was the antibiotics causing this and weren't worried, so yes, it can get through to the milk - and why else would they be so careful which ones to prescribe to breastfeeding women?
