SMA staydown

Hi!

I've just switched 4mo DS to SMA staydown as he's always been incredibly sicky. I only found out such a milk existed this morning. I'm fairly certain he doesn't have reflux as he's a chunky little soul and is never bothered by posseting. I'm just tired of being coated in baby vomit 24/7.

Can anyone offer me any advice about getting the powder to disolve properly? It's meant to be mixed with fridge temp water but I'm finding the bottle teat is getting clogged with lumps.

Hoping it's going to be a miracle cure Grin

Thanks ladies xx

never used it myself (bfing no2, number 1 ffed, but not sicky) but friend found it great. she used variflow teat.

hope it helps. also, enfamil AR is good apparently

why not mix using a bottle cap thing and then put the teat on once mixed.

question though - how come its ok for this milk to be mixed with cold water in light of the normal 70c rule???

millingtonsmummy · 14/09/2010 20:08

Thanks ladies.

nickytwotimes I think I have some variflow teats in the cupboard that came with my bottles when I bought them. I'll dig them out and give them a whirl.

mumnwlondon the cold water thing has confused me too. The tin suggests that it's the maize starch in the milk powder that helps with the regurgitation and it's this ingredient that requires the refrigerated water.

Oh, and it hasn't made a blind bit of difference so far! We were both soaked in milky vomit by the end of the day Hmm. Only 3 bottles in though so a little early to judge ...

yes I was wondering that, sounds very odd to me!

StealthPolarBear · 14/09/2010 20:12

Sorry to hear it hasn't helped OP :( Hope you notice a difference in the next few days.

I'd love for SMA to explain how this milk is safe to be prepared with cooled boiled water, for newborn babies

MumNWLondon · 14/09/2010 20:45

millingtonsmummy - maybe call SMA and ask? I suspect the reason is that the product doesn't work for 70c water so sicky babies have to take the bacteria risk Sad.

DS2 also very sicky, vomits after every big feed (I am BFing) - he is now 20 weeks, so I know what you mean about always being covered in baby vomit. My SIL suggested a little baby rice before each feed, her paed told her ok from 12 weeks to try this (her DS had reflux), suppose its the same principle as corn maize.

StealthPolarBear · 14/09/2010 20:46

If that is the case surely they should be spelling out the risks!! If this was for older babies fair enough but it's meant for birth onwards

millingtonsmummy · 14/09/2010 21:27

Good point stealthpolarbear, this milk is for 0-12 months so if it is the same principle as a bit of baby rice then you're right it shouldn't be given to a tiny baby.

Feel for you mumnwlondon! DD was sicky but not this bad. I know it stopped when she was weaned so not too much longer to wait before DS stops too I hope.

I'm still BFing, was going to wait until 6 months to wean but now thinking maybe a little baby rice before each feed might be a good idea. He is my 3rd DC and the other 2 never puked. But at least he's a happy chucker, and its much much less bad than at the start when he puked whole feeds on regular basis.
