Blisters on nipples - any experience?

Hi everyone

I'm getting a bit obsessed with my boobs!

I am ebf a 3 month old. Had everything going(am currently on third bout of mastitis), thrush etc but now appear to have tiny blisters on my nipples - they are clear rather than white so presume not milk blisters. They are on both nipples.

I popped one but wasn't sure if I should or what they are...any advice?

thanks
Mrs H

Is the baby latched on properly? If the nipple isn't far enough inside the babies mouth, it could get grazed/blistered.

Also, have you started putting any new creams/lotions on your nipples? Allergy rashes can be raised, clear-filled little spots - though I'd have thought they'd be itchy or sore too.

Ah interesting! I'm pretty sure he's latched on right but I am using a cream the doc prescribed for thrush which might be it.. they are indeed itchy and sore!!

Which cream? If it's clotrimazole it can cause allergic reactions. It should be miconazole.

Take a look at this:

www.breastfeedingnetwork.org.uk/pdfs/BfN_Thrush_leaflet_Feb_2009.pdf

which is very helpful. You may need to consider fluconazole tablets. I would also recommend taking acidophilus when you have thrush.

Much sympathy :(

Yip, just checked and I'm on my third tube of Clotrimazole... will have a chat to the doctor.

I've also been given single (strong) doses of Fluconazole as I have deep rooted pain which kicks in about 15 mins after baby stops feeding and lasts for an hour. This leaflet seems to indicate that it will not be effective on its own and needs to be linked to a lower dose for 10 days.

Big sigh!

Thanks v v much OrganicCarrotCake
