Freezing formula?

I'm making up formula in accordance with the guidelines, and have been using cartons when out for a day or when I've been caught out by a sudden attack of starvation Smile.

Would there be anything wrong in making up formula and freezing it, to take on day trips? The cartons cost a lot, and aren't great environmentally.

Nothing contra-indicates freezing on the box.

seeing as you have to make it up per feed due to the risk of bacteria etc then I wouldn't.
You just need to get a little box to hold the powder to take out with you- they sell them in TEsco- with 3 little compartments. I'm sure they sell them elsewhere as well. Then you just need to take boiled water with you and mix it when you're out

But I'd need to take water that would maintain a temperature of 70 degrees, or ask someone to boil the water for me then wait half an hour! Grin

I know that this goes against current guidelines but I always used to take a bottle of water out with me then add formula when needed. I also have been known to take a very hot bottle of formula out when I know I'll need it in an hour or so. Then there's always a microwave... Shock

How about putting it in freezer for a couple of hours, but not actually freezing it? That way it would stay cold enough for a few hours, esp if in bag with ice pack.

Or use a vacuum flask filled with boiled water. I bought one from Tescos for £5 & it maintains a temp of over 70 degrees for at least 6 hours. (I did an experiment yesterday - geek!)

Thanks blossom, that's exactly the sort of nerdy public spirited behaviour that's so helpful on MN! Will go to Tesco immediately!

skipping, afaik if the formula has been made up with boiling water then then any bacteria should be killed.

guidelines for childcare settings for example, where it is impossible for them to make each and every bottle up separately do advise making them all up with boiling water at the beginning of the day and then storing in the fridge.

this is slightly riskier than just making up fresh each time, but not hugely so as long as you are careful with the temp of the bottle. and as long as you then heat it quickly and she drinks it straight away

these guidelines are on the NHS and WHO websites

i think you would be absolutely fine to do this as long as you could keep the bottle below 5degrees while out and about and had a good way of heating it back up

tbh tho cartons are a lot easier Grin

I'm not normally so nerdy, obviously motherhood suits me :)

blossom2010 · 12/09/2010 12:37

Just want to say that I'm not suggesting mums are nerds Blush Just that being a mum makes me think about things more now I have anotherperson to consider.

Probably being oversensitive but had a horrible moment in the shower thinking someone might take offence & don't want to cause that :)

PS - I don't think I can take the credit for the flask idea, have afeeling I read about it on a dofferent MN thread...

Bless you blossom, not geeky or nerdy at all! I was just teasing you! You're right though, being a ma makes you think about lots of things a lot more, doesn't it? I've become obsessed by washable nappies...
