Making up formula on holiday (Majorca) ...?

Tillyscoutsmum · 10/09/2010 19:46

Does anyone know if I'm ok to make formula bottles with boiled tap water in Majorca ? Or does it need to be filtered or mineral water ?

I also wonder whether anyone knows how readily available Aptamil is out there ?

TIA

We brought the Aptamil cartons with us. As many as you can, given your weight restrictions. Give you a chance to check out whats available in local shops. I've never made formula abroad. I was in France recently and there was ready made formula there, French brand, baby got on fine with it.
What age your baby?

Tillyscoutsmum · 10/09/2010 21:55

Baby is 9 months. We've got really low weight restrictions so didn't want to take too much with us but I'm a bit worried DS will be awkward and not take alternative formula if I can't get Aptamil. I suspect I'm worrying over nothing. He generally eats anything Smile

we were in northern spain last year and i saw Aptamil on the supermarket shelves so i wouldnt think you would have a problem getting hold of it.

As for the water, you are probably better off using Evian and boiling it for bottles rather than local tap water.

We were in Turkey a few weeks ago (feels like years ago already) and we used bottled water just to be on the safe side. It probably would have been fine but if it had of caused a problem i didn't want to be stuck in a foreign country with a baby with an exploding bum.

why not phone the aptamil helpline and see if they have an equivalent in Majorca. I would probably use bottled water to make up feeds - choose the one with the lowest sodium content and boil it before use.

buttercupp · 11/09/2010 07:45

when i lived in spain the equivalent was milupa which i think is the maker?but instead of it being in little writing it was the main word on the box.It was on all the shelves and my mum told me it was the equivalent to aptamil in the uk when she came on holiday

peakylovessummer · 11/09/2010 07:52

i might be wrong, but i think they advise against using bottled water to make up formula due to its high mineral content.

Seona1973 · 11/09/2010 08:16

when the alternative is tap water that could make your lo ill then bottled water is the best option. That is why you look for one with the lowest sodium content.

How do I manage bottle feeding while on holiday?

MumNWLondon · 11/09/2010 22:56

apparently evian ok as its very low in minerals compared to other water. look for the one with the lowest sodium content.

Thank you all

I've just come back from there, you can buy ready made formula from big supermarkets like Carrefour. The font and design of Enfamil is identical to Aptamil so it's pretty easy to spot.

PaulineCampbellJones · 12/09/2010 14:55

Aptamil is called Milupa and is in a green package, most pharmacies sell it. It's called inicio if you are buying stage one. Be aware though that the scoop inside is metric so take one with you if you want to stick to ounces. Also there is a milk that looks identical to Aptamil even down to the polar bear but it's actually the same as cow and gate over here.
I have been making it up with boiled water, cooledfor half and hour. Then topping up with mineral water to make it colder.
Mineral water is recommended on the side of the package for the whole bottle but that won't kill the bacteria.
Have a good holiday!

mrsgordonfreeman · 12/09/2010 15:05

Oh, right, shows how much I know really Blush

PaulineCampbellJones · 12/09/2010 15:18

I only know because I am lucky enough to speak the lingo and talked to the pharmacist. The enfamil is identical to aptamil packaging which is super confusing!
