Too much water bad for milk supply? - Any studies?

I'm a bfing per supporter and we had a discussion today about how much water to drink. It b=varied from a pint of water each time baby feeds to drinking to mother's thirst. I'm sure I had read that too much water can inhibit milk production but I can only find articles that state too much water is bad for milk supply but not an actual explanation of why (i.e. messes up hormones/prevents something or another work/whatever) or an actual study showing women given X amount of water more than normally required lead to Y amount less milk.

Any pointers anyone?

No advice, but I'd be interested to know too. I'd not heard this before.

Marking my place - I'd not heard this before either.

Kellymom has some links to research articles on the issue, and just says to drink to mother's thirst for most mothers (but doesn't reference too much being bad for milk supply).

I read somewhere once- may be rubbish -that drinking too much water inhibits potassium production and potassium has something to do with helping to make milk. I don't remember the specifics though.

I've personally experienced this - had fluids pushed by I.V. which seriously limited my milk supply. Once I was on free fluids my supply seemed to come back. Obviously that's only anecdata but I've seen TikTok saying drink to thirst not X litres as some people suggest.

yy - drink to thirst. Drinking just for the sake of it/drinking too much water can disrupt the electrolyte balances and reduce milk supply

Too much water is bad for anyone, that's what they mean surely? Dilutes your salts and things in your blood. Or something Grin

I always drink to thirst. Unless you have thirst inhibition problems surely responding to what your body asks for is always a good idea!
