Caffeine and breast milk question

CageBird · 10/09/2010 11:50

After a catalogue of probs with BF (tongue tie, thrush, bacterial infection, I could go on....) I am expressing all 16 day old DS's feeds.

I've been keeping clear of caffeine but have had the odd cup of tea, had one this morning just before expressing. Do you think caffeine makes it into breast milk? Is it likely to unsettle LO?

Have been guzzling camomile tea in the hopes that that makes it to LO, now here's me hoping that the caffeine does not Confused

??

afaik it does go through to breastmilk, but then i drink approx 3 or 4 cups of tea and coffee EACH a day and it doesn't seem to ahve affected my 3 at all lol

just see how you go i reckon, if you notice any change then stop, but i thinmk you shjould be ok with a couple of cups of tea a day tbh

CageBird · 10/09/2010 11:58

Yay. Life with kids is hard enough without having to avoid tea!

absolutely. and IME when you are breastfeeding you need to have tea and cake every day

I was wondering the same cagebird - so I'm reading this with interest.

I just work on the basis that if I drink it before lunchtime, the BM will be okish by bedtime. Right?
Eeeek I hope so. DS isn't sleeping more than 2 hours at a stretch atm, and I don't want to blame myself for the one measley coffee I had yesterday at 11 am for that! :)

I have one or two cups of proper coffee every morning and maybe 2 cups of tea throughout the day - haven't yet noticed a problem for my daughter. (7 weeks)

Try it. It made my DD1 bonkers so I didn't even try with DD2. But then it had affected them in the womb as well, so if you did drink tea and coffee normally during your pregnancy without any effect on the baby 's behavior then may be you don't need to stay clear of it during BF.

With DC1 I drank tea and lots of it until one day I stopped and so did his colic. It could have been coincidence though. Personally I wouldn't cut out caffiene unless your baby is very colicky.

Like the other have said, don't forget to have plenty of cake with your tea too Smile

CageBird · 10/09/2010 13:34

Ah. Now he is quite colicky. Sigh. At least there's cake.

I'm quite affected by caffeine, one cup of tea gives me loads of energy (which is why I LIKE it). But it stands to reason that the baby would be affected too.

Might try a cup just after expressing, then there will be a couple of hours in between. Same rules as alcohol, possibly?

Sounds like a good idea although I had to switch to decaf in the end.
