Going cold turkey- is mastitis inevitable? WHat can I get in just in case?

So, after yesterdays desperate thread about a 2 year old who doesn't sleep and who feeds constantly, I took one of hte more jokey suggestions of wearing a swimsuit to bed and by golly, it only worked Grin God bless you Speedo. So now, I am comitted to stopping. No more milk. But I am worried about mastitis, I really don't want to be ill, but I don't see how I can prevent it. I'm off shopping for the savoy cabbage this afternoon, but is there anything else I can stock up on just in case? I don't have a pump anymore, but can try and hand express if I need to.

When I stopped when ds was 16 months I was also back at work so he was only doing 2 feeds a day plus in the night if he needed settling (has always been a poor sleeper).

I had to go away for a week on a trinaing course so I just hand expressed a little each night to releive any discomfort.

Right, am full to bursting and leaking Blush
Have no breats pads as haven't needed them for over a year. Did get a nice big savoy in town though Wink. SO, should I hand express some? I can see this is going to be much harder than I thought. Am actually dreading bedtime :(

I fed dd (3.5) for close on 2 yrs and like you I remember asking how do I avoid mastitis, nobody, including my mw (who had bf 5 children) had much info for me Sad the most I could gather was that it was really important to do it slowly, so it took us 3.5 mths to bring it completely to an end.

HTH, good luck Smile
