How long does diazepam stay in your system? Will it interfere with nursing?

Ok, I didn't know whether to post this in health or here so sorry if I've posted in the wrong place.

I've got an extremely sore back which has gotten worse the last couple of days to the point where it's sore to sit, stand, lie down or move at all. The pain's started going down my legs as well now. Nothing's helping.

I've been bothered on and off over the years with muscle spasms in my lower back. A heat wrap usually nips it in the bud and relaxes the muscles before it gets too bad. I have a heat wrap on as that usually helps and I've taken a couple of paracetamol but they haven't done anything. Going to head for a hot hot bath soon to see if that helps.

I have an appointment at the docs tomorrow to see if they can help but the last couple of times it's been as bad as this they have prescribed diazepam as it instantly relaxes the muscles and I get instant relief but I'm currently nursing. I have some expressed milk in the freezer but realistically probably only enough to do a day or maybe two. I really don't want to stop breastfeeding, my daughter's only 4 months and I love nursing her. So does anyone know if I'd have to stop breatfeeding if I take daizepam and how long it would stay in my system for.

Going for that bath now but will be checking when I get out, definately not ignoring any responses to this question!! Thank you for reading!

You can't breastfeed and take diazepam, unfortunately, but hopefully your GP will be able to suggest an alternative. Have you tried the Ibuprofen gel?

There are very few meds which you really can't/mustn't bf with - it's often a balance of risks and depends on dose and age of baby.

Check it out here:

Thanks for the replies! Out of the bath and I feel a bit better but still in a lot of pain so hopefully I sleep ok tonight and DD doesn't wake up too often!

bristols I don't have any ibuprofen gel to try but don't think it would help that much as my back isn't responding very well to heat pads, so it's worse than it has been in a while.

tiktok thanks for the link that site is great and I'll be heading to my doctors with a note of the alternative drugs recommended by the site to see if she thinks they'll be suitable. I'll have to bookmark it for future reference

Leonie I didn't think I'd be able to bf with diazepam but it's nice to know that someone has been successfully nursing with an alternative!

Thank you, thank you, thank you! Grin

Both for the link and the info on clonazepam. I take it normally (am off it while pregnant) for muscle spasms and sleep issues related to Fibromyalgia and thought I wouldn't be able to take it while breastfeeding. But if I can, that'll mean I'll probably be able to stay off my other meds (which would dry up milk) for longer. Grin

Ended up having to get an emergency appointment this morning as my back was so much worse and I could barely walk. Got co-codemol and extra strength ibuprofen. Discussed diazepam but told him I wasn't happy taking it while breastfeeding and he said that clonazepam would have the same effect, so we've left it to see how I get on using painkillers and heat treatment.

The painkillers have helped loads and although I'm still getting a lot of pain it is far more managable now. Will hopefully avoid having to resort to anything else. Thank you everyone for your help!!

japhrimel I'm glad someone else has also benefited from this post. Hope you get your meds sorted so you can bf!
